      • Small Pleasures - A Pleasure to Read

I enjoyed reading this poignant novel. As well as being beautifully written, with a sensitive and honest portrayal of the central character's motivations and relationships, the story line was compelling. The author also successfully evoked post-WW2 austerity and the 1950 period setting through detailed descriptions of food, clothes, furnishings and the cars of the period. I was born in 1950 and lived in Petts Wood in Kent until I was 3. Petts Wood was where my parents began their married lives. I had heard my mother talk what suburban life was like there. I recognised many of the place names, which added to a sense of appreciation of this novel.
