    Synopsis
"The novel that foreshadowed Donald Trump's authoritarian appeal."--Salon It Can't Happen Here is the only one of Sinclair Lewis's later novels to match the power of Main Street, Babbitt , and Arrowsmith . A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler's aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press. Called "a message to thinking Americans" by the Springfield Republican when it was published in 1935, It Can't Happen Here is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today's news.

IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE - GUESS AGAIN - IT CAN!

Unfortunately I cannot comment on the content because I have not read it yet. I have other books to read in my queue. The Title was familiar and so was the Author so I thought I would add it to my reading list. I bought one for myself and one for my brother-in-law for Christmas. He likes old historical things so thought he would enjoy it as well. This book is written on the common theme that history tends to repeat itself if we allow complacency to settle in and not remember what has happened in the past. It is good to be well read and well informed so you can judge for yourself rather than be compromised by propaganda.

      • Top critical review

Haven't finished it yet, but I love the author and his novels.

This book was advertised as a used, hard-cover book. I like older hard-covers for their larger, more readable typography and lighter-weight paper. Alas, this was (as usual) a newly-printed paperback, printed offset on offset stock, making it twice as heavy as a hard-cover version. I was disappointed.

      • an object lesson in abdicating personal responsibility and the potential consequences

An very thinly veiled look at what Hitler would become, and a view of the impact his policies would have on Germany's citizenry and society before spreading his meglomania far enough to then also effect (and afflict) too many of those in other countries of the world. The novel's hero turned villian who helps guide society towards its descent has a similarity to Donald Trump in certain particulars.

      • It CAN happen here!

This novel is as germane today as it ever was in the mid 30s. The fear of authoritarianism and fascism were in people's minds then as it is now. The confluence of wealth, religion and the military industrial complex working together to create an opportunity for such a government to be in power is just as real today as it was then.
