Heute wird dies nicht mehr als gesellschaftlich akzeptable Loesung fur all die Probleme der geistigen Behinderung gesehen. Es haben sich weltweit differenzierte Denkweisen etabliert. Die Normalitat ist in der Diskursgeschichte der Behindertenpadagogik eine Variable, die nicht wegzudenken ist. Normalisierung bedeutet, den geistig Behinderten ein so normales Leben wie moeglich zu gewahren. Normalisierung ist ein Wunsch vieler geistig behinderter Menschen, denn diese fuhlen sich als normal und wollen folglich auch so behandelt werden. In der Praxis aber zeigt sich leider oftmals, dass Entscheidungen uber den Kopf der geistig behinderten Menschen hinweg getroffen werden, zu denen sie durchaus selbst in der Lage waren. Damit wird ignoriert, dass geistig behinderte Menschen die gleichen Rechte wie Nicht-Behinderte haben. Ihnen wird also das Recht, ein selbstbestimmtes Leben zu fuhren, vorenthalten.
