Das Buch gliedert sich in zwei grosse Bereiche: Der theoretischen Teil definiert den Begriff der Unterrichtsstoerung und beschreibt die gangigen Massnahmen zur Stoerungsvorbeugung bzw. Stoerungsbehandlung und untergliedert sie naher. Schon hierbei zeigen sich grosse Unterschiede hinsichtlich Ansatz, Wirksamkeit und Aufwand. So kann Stoerungspravention auf der Unterrichtsebene, der Beziehungsebene oder der Organisationsebene erfolgen. Bezuglich der Stoerungsintervention betrachtet das Buch lehrerzentrierte, kooperative und organisatorische Konzepte als Reaktion auf Unterrichtsstoerungen. Der zweite Teil geht der Frage nach, inwiefern die theoretischen UEberlegungen und Interventionskonzepte tatsachlich in der Schule Anwendung finden. Zu diesem Zweck beobachtete der Autor gezielt Unterrichtssequenzen und interviewte Lehrer und Schuler zu diesem Thema. Gestutzt von zentralen Leitfragen veranschaulicht das Buch unter anderem, dass viele Interventionsmassnahmen theoretisch durchaus als sinnvoll erscheinen, im Schulalltag jedoch aufgrund unterschiedlichster Faktoren nicht oder nur unzureichend umgesetzt werden.
