About this product

    Product Information

Long before Perry Mason and Jessica Fletcher held court as popular television sleuths, another private eye ruled the airwaves. Ellery Queen was the creation of novelists Manfred Bennington Lee and Frederic Dannay, a slightly spaced-out mystery writer whose modus operandi generally involved combing through massive amounts of evidence and endless lists of suspects to somehow unearth the truth. Ellery first cropped up on radio, but by 1950 (with television still a young and fresh medium), he landed his own television series, starring a succession of actors in the title role: first Richard Hart, then Lee Bowman, then Lee Philips, then Jim Hutton, then George Nader. Following the show's cancellation in 1959 and a 16-year delay, Ellery returned to television for a one-season stint, with the title shortened to simply ELLERY QUEEN. The detective was played on this occasion by Jim Hutton, with a supporting cast that included John Hillerman (MAGNUM, P.I.) and David Wayne. Also of note were the program's guest stars during this period, which included such familiar faces as Don Ameche, Roddy McDowall, Ed McMahon and Cesar Romero. The entire 22-episode 1975-76 revival of ELLERY QUEEN appears in this box set, as it originally ran on NBC.

        Excellent Series Top To Bottom

This is an EXCELLENT series of one hour whodunnits, with expert casting, directing, acting, and writing. As well, it is set in the 1940s which adds interest regarding wardrobe, sets/styles, and customs of that day. Asa result, this will never really go "out of date". Regular stars Jim Hutton and David Wayne were perfectly believable as son and father, and the guest casts always had veteran, often legendary screen stars. VERY enjoyable fun, and an example of how good TV can be even if circa mid 1970s.

        Great expectations, poor performance.

Discs did not operate properly, cut off and froze in mid play. EBay forced to step in to get refund.

      • Great series! Good luck figuring out whodunit!

Great series!!! I totally missed it when it came out. A bit pricey for only 22 episodes but there are a dearth of these DVDs available. One disc, however, will only play in a BluRay player instead of a DVD. Oh, I defy you sleuths to figure out the murderer in ANY of these episodes! Four stars instead of five due to the price and one finicky DVD.

      • Because Ellery solves the crimes, his name is appropriate as a title for this show.

I enjoy the way Ellery helps his father solve cases as they come to him to discover their solution. They interact well and Ellery always has a way of figuring out Who done it.

      • Ellery is no mystery just quality TV

I watched the series for the one season it was on in the 70's, due to the short run and limited number of episodes it isn't in syndication so I bought the DVD since there are no new shows to watch during the pandemic
