    Synopsis
"The novel that foreshadowed Donald Trump's authoritarian appeal."--Salon It Can't Happen Here is the only one of Sinclair Lewis's later novels to match the power of Main Street, Babbitt , and Arrowsmith . A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler's aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press. Called "a message to thinking Americans" by the Springfield Republican when it was published in 1935, It Can't Happen Here is a shockingly prescient novel that remains as fresh and contemporary as today's news. With an Introduction by Michael Meyer and an Afterword by Gary Scharnhorst

The irony of "It Can't Happen Here"

The major American novelist Sinclair Lewis took on 1936 politics in this dystopian novel that stands with "Brave New World" and "1984". The winner of the Presidential election that year turns out to be a two-bit Napoleon who soon, with the help of his Cabinet and henchmen, changes the United States into a kinder, gentler version of the Third Reich. It will scare you, because, it can happen here. You may see some resonance with the 2016 election. If so, take comfort in the upbeat ending of the novel: even dictators don't last forever, it just seems like it.

      • A Dark but prescient Tale

Altho Sinclair Lewis is best known for his satirical comments on middle class complacency, "It Can't Happen Here" is an novel about the fragility of of American democracy that is as relevant today as it was upon its publication in 1935. It is as well written as his better know works and details the ascension to the Presidency of a no-nothing, self-aggrandizing buffoon who makes unrealistic promises to a weary but gullible Depression-age nation. The country quickly becomes a Fascist state through tactics similar to the rise of authoritarian regimes of Nazi Germany and pre-war Italy. I serves as an ongoing warning to those who deny the possibility of such a regime in the US. Altho the book makes reference to political figures and events that may be obscure to many present day readers, ...

      • It it Deja Vu?

This story really captures how a country could turn Fascist. Especially liked the part where the newly elected president disputed the size of the crowd at an event. A timely read.

      • Perfect title

Written in the 1930s it sounds like today. Authoritarian President elected and he takes the country to a very dark place. The message....it can happen here.
