Evans hybrid heads.
I build custom drums and was looking for a head that gave me both long lasting durability and the signature snare sound I hope to project. Many years ago I used a similar design from a now defunct company. Needless to say I was skeptical about spending the money on a new head. I was very happy with the sound I have been able to attain and, so far, the durability. I play a heavy Evans 500 on my resonant side and I don't have to worry about the snare buzz from playing next to the bass player. This head also allows me to walk into the studio and not have tape or gel pads stuck all over my snare. I'm very picky about my sound and I'm constantly checking my tuning. This head allows me to not have to fret with most of that. The only issue that has now come up is I have had to go with lug locks ... Hard Hitters Unite!
This head is a hard hitter's dream. I used to go through snare heads every few weeks. Enter the Evans Hybrid Coated Snare Batter. I've used it for OVER A YEAR and it's still going strong. I have another in queue, but I don't know if I'll actually need to change it for a while! These heads are about 3 to 4 times the cost of regular batter heads, but they last much, much longer than 2 ply snare heads, even ones with a dot. I use 2B's and Thomas Lange Vic Firth sticks, 6'7, 245 lbs and have 2XL hands, just to give you an idea of how hard I hit and this stands up to all the abuse! I recorded a handful of rock tracks tracks in February with this head and the attack was outstanding. I was very pleased with the sound it emitted.
