    Excellent product for model building.

What a wonderful little kit. Very well designed and implemented. I guess that's what I have grown to expect from Tamiya products. I bought this as a tool for wooden ship building. Not only does it work well, it was a blast to build. Simple, easy to follow instructions leads to a product that I will use for years to come. The motor is not overpowered like that of a Dremel tool. That's important as in model ship building, you want exact dimensions. This little tool is worth its weight in gold IMHO.

  • Top critical review

The size of the unit is ideal for modelmaking. using drill bits no larger then the one furnished is good

This product while cleverly designed is poorly executed. The plastic straight-cut gears are noisy. the plastic exterior case requires one, possibly two additional screws to insure it staying together. With one exception there are no real bearing surfaces in the unit, the shafts just float in a pair of lug-like projections.

  • TAMIYA ELECTRIC HANDY DRILL MODEL KIT

This hand drill comes as an unassembled model kit, once you assemble it you can use it on model kits and soft woods. it does drill pine wood and this drill is light in weight, would use for plastic kits and soft woods and resin models. This drill I would recommend for light labor, not heavy duty, the gearing inside is plastic, but it has a good feel and a great angle for drilling.

  • A must have for modelers and handcrafters!

I ordered this small gem by recommendation from a couple mate modelers because I was having problems drilling my styrene model kits with the RTX rotary tool as it spins too fast that the heat of the drill melts the plastic. Anyway, I have to confess that I had serious doubts that it would work. C'mon... a drill that you have to assemble out of a kit? Surprisingly it works and very well! And I must say that the little beast has a hell of a torque in a considerable low speed that won't melt the plastic (I think I read 400 rpm somewhere). Also it is super-ergonomic, a certain weight that gives some balance and a very comfortable grip. Let's see the details. It came in a nice 9" x 5.5" card box. Opening the box, you will find three sprues in different colors: a blue one with the tool "hull", ...

  • A very useful tool, not a toy

Several people recommended the Tamiya Electric Handy Drill so I decided to get one. Putting it together was straight forward. It is pretty amazing just how much torque is created considering it is powered by two AA batteries. The RPMs are slow enough to be user friendly working in plastics. If you do a lot scratch building you will find this drill well suited to drilling locating holes for small pins and such. I am definitely pleased with my purchase.
