About this product

Product Information

In RIO GRANDE, the last part of John Ford's classic Cavalry Trilogy, John Wayne stars as Kirby York, a colonel at an army outpost along the U.S.-Mexico border where the Apache are always a problem. When his son, Jeff (Claude Jarman Jr.), whom he hasn't seen in more than a decade, arrives at the fort after flunking out of West Point, Yorke treats him coldly, warning the young man not to expect preferential treatment, which Jeff assures him he doesn't want. Yorke's ex-wife, Kathleen (Maureen O'Hara), appears, intending to persuade Jeff to leave the army. Yorke refuses to do the necessary paperwork to release his son, a decision seconded by Jeff, who has begun to adapt to army life--and before Kathleen can regroup for another attempt, the fort is attacked by the Apache. The making of RIO GRANDE was mandated by producer Herbert Yates, who would agree to finance the director's THE QUIET MAN only if Ford first made a Western, as insurance, with that film's proposed leading actors. Ford continues the series' realistic depiction of the rigors of life on a cavalry post in the late-19th-century Southwest, and members of the director's stock company--most notably Victor McLaglen, Harry Carey Jr., and Ben Johnson--acquit themselves admirably.

I bought a large amount of 36 VHS tapes from this seller so far. Everything came as described and in good condition. Amazing seller with great customer service. They were always in constant communication with updates, and they tested all of their tapes again to make sure it ran smoothly before mailing, then threw in an extra tape for free as well. Great prices, great service, great seller, great products. I would highly recommend Ruby Deals and I plan to buy more tapes from them in the future!

This is a great seller. I've placed orders of 12, 9 and 6 vhs tapes and they've all been very well packed and the deliveries prompt. They emailed me once to tell me that they wouldn't be sending me a certain tape because, in their testing, they found that, even though it played well, it jammed when they tried to fast-forward and rewind...and they had tested it on more than one player. Their thorough testing prevented problems for both of us. They're great and I recommend them.

I purchased this tape to complete what is referred to as the "Cavalry Trilogy" with, undoubtedly the best western actor, John Wayne. Along with Fort Apache and She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, they tell the story of a cavalryman's life on the frontier. The character names change, as do the actors, and the chronology reverses the way they were filmed (Ribbon, Apache, Rio Grande). Yet they give a graphic, although 'Hollywoodized' version, of the life and times of career military men in "keeping the peace" on the frontier. Their devotion to duty, honor and country let them endure civil and government bureaucracies, a physically demanding and life-threatening lifestyle and the privations of a very low-paying occupation. Had it not been for men like these, the life and country we know today ...

We purchased it as a gift for a friend that loves Westerns and especially likes John Wayne. He was very pleased with the tape.
