Bogart Has Bacall Forever from this Movie's Beginning
This movie is full of famous names. Based on a book written by Ernest Hemingway, the screenplay was written by William Faulkner. It is directed by Howard Hawks. And it stars Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall in the movie where they met and fell in love. In a supporting role, we have Walter Brennan with his famous limp that we became so accustomed to in "The Real McCoys" TV series. And finally, Hoagy Carmichael entertains. So what about the story? Steve Morgan (Humphrey Bogart) is a fisherman with his helper Eddie (Walter Brennan) in Martinique in 1940. Martinique is part of the Vichy government of France in 1940 (Nazi). Thus, Morgan has to have a pass each day to leave the port. While in the Hotel Marquis where he stays, he runs into Slim (Lauren Bacall), who sings in ... This movie is full of famous names. It is part of the French Resistance. Unwilling to become involved in politics, Morgan finally accepts the deal for the money. But when he has picked up the husband and wife, they run into a patrol boat, and the husband gets shot. Morgan has to remove the bullet with Slim's help. The patient recuperates in the hotel basement. Soon Renaud, the Nazi governor of the island, becomes aware of something fishy going on. He suspects Morgan. From there you are on your own. This movie is all about the flirtation between Morgan and Slim. He tells her "Stop the baby-talk." She kisses him, and he asks "How did you like that?" She says "I don't know. I'll have to do it again." She kisses him again, and she says "It helps when you put some effort into it." There is much more of this. Another great part of the story is the entertainment provided by Hoagy Carmichael on the piano with his Latin accompaniment. We get to hear "Am I Blue", "How Little We Know," and "Hong Kong Blues." "Hong Kong Blues" is my favorite, but Bacall actually sings "Am I Blue" with the band. (Andy Williams was hired to dub her voice, but they decided to let her voice play in the movie." This was Lauren Bacall's debut movie. With the DVD there is also a wonderful special feature that tells how the movie was made and concentrates on the Bogart-Bacall connection. It includes interviews with Leonard Maltin and Robert Osborne, who are both movie reviewers and experts on the movies. This is a great introduction to the romance between these two stars which caused a follow-up of several more movies together.

A Great Movie, like Casablanca
Here's the great thing: This movie was made in Black and White before Casablanca was made in color, and for my money, this is the more enjoyable of the two films--which have a lot in common. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart met on this set of this movie, and the chemistry between them in the movie is dynamite. Hemingway wrote a book by the same title, but famous author William Faulkner wrote this script from the Hemingway book. Faulkner is reported to have said to Hemingway, "I could write a good script from the worst thing you ever wrote." Hemingway said, "What is that?" Faulkner replied, "That piece of crap called 'To Have and Have Not.'" And sure enough Faulkner did write an excellent script. The film is a pleasure to watch. The book, ... Walter Brennan provides the comic relief as a rummy named Eddie who is Bogart's side-kick. This movie is good, classical fare, worth the trouble and then some.

The character actors shine brightly!
This movie is almost as good as Casablanca but with much more comedy. If Bogie and Bacall were not enough, get ready to laugh with Walter Brennan, Hoagy Carmichael and Marcel Dalio. This story was written by Ernest Hemingway and screenplay by William Faulkner. What’s not to like?
