I watch this when it was first released and fell in love with it. Could never find it I can't figure out why it was never made more readily available. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to know about life struggles and just trying to make yourself better.

I loved this movie! I first discovered it when I was browsing for recordings of Jake Shimabukuro. He is a phenomenal ukelele player from Hawaii and I discovered he did the musical score for this movie. When I watched the trailer for the movie I was hooked. It is based on a true story in Japan around 1965. A coal mining town is losing its base industry (coal) and tries to think of another industry to attract people to the area and spend money and give local residents jobs. Because they have natural hot springs in the area, they decide to go for a Hawaiian theme entertainment center to feature hula dancing. However, they have no Center and obviously, no trained dancers. They import a teacher from Tokyo to teach the local girls to do the hula. The conflicts, disapproval and other ... I loved this movie! It leaves you felling good. It won multiple awards in Japan as well as Best Picture and I'm sorry it wasn't an Academy Award winner in the US. Otherwise we all would have bought it by now. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. Good viewing for the whole family. Since the movie is set in the sixties there is a little cultural values you may not agree with but its true to the time. You also have to live with reading subtitles, but that's the only criticism I can think of.

This movie is a true gem. I don't even know how I first tripped over this movie in my netflix listings, but once I saw it, I just had to recommend it to others. Everyone I've recommended this movie to has come up with the same 5 star rating. It's heartwarming, fresh, inspiring, funny & unforgettable. Men & woman, grown ups & kids alike (if they are into subtitles!) will enjoy this wonderful movie based on a true story. This is an underground classic, as I don't ever remember this even being shown in our art theater. I'm so glad I experienced this movie. The "making of" featurettes & interviews are just as enjoyable as the movie.This movie is a true gem. Another great film from Japan
Hula Girls is a heartwarming, true story of coal miner's daughter's becoming Hula dancers to save their dying village. It won Best picture in Japan in 2006, and for good reason! Wonderful acting, and fabulous music (from Hawaii's Jake Shimabokuro, and Na Leo). Definitely in my top 10 favorite movie of all time now.
