About this product

Product Information

Dani Tanovic's debut film about the futility of the Bosnian War stars Branko Duric as Ciki, a Bosnian soldier with really bad luck. When he and a few other relief soldiers try to join their Bosnian comrades on the front, they get lost in fog, fall asleep, and are awakened at dawn by Serbian gunfire. His comrades are all blown away, but Ciki saves himself by diving into an abandoned trench in no man's land. Nino (Rene Bitorajac), a Serbian soldier, sneaks into the trench and finds Ciki. Though both men are armed and dangerous, they are nonetheless unable to escape the trench without getting shot at by either side. The UN is called in to fix the situation but it only makes matters worse. When an English journalist, Jane Livingston (Katrin Cartlidge), gets wind of the story, a media frenzy breaks out across the front.Tanovic knows his subject matter well as he worked as a war documentarian during the Bosnian conflict. The title of the film, NO MAN'S LAND, is especially fitting given the setting--rolling hills covered with flowers, birds, and insects. The background sound is filled with birds chirping and bugs buzzing, and Tanovic also composed the soundtrack.

  • A sardonic yet sobering portrayal of war

I bought this movie by recommendation from someone online who said it was a good anti-war movie, and that it succinctly and creatively explained the lunacy of war. From start to finish, this movie is riddled scenes of bleak battlefields and confused soldiers, fighting for what they believe they believe. There are no clear antagonists in this movie, as both sides argue as to who started the war and for what reason. However, it is interesting to note that two distinct groups of nationalists can relate to one another on a communal level as is shown in this movie. This movie shows in many ways that wars are more often political than defensive. As for war movies, I give this a 3.5 our of 5 stars... leaning towards a 4. For movies in general, a definite 4 or 4.5. Though the ending is a bit ...

  • Entertaining!

I watched this movie when it was first out and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was happy to find it on DVD. I didn't remember it being captioned which was hard to read at times (white lettering against a light background). Plot is an interesting concept with a unexpected ending.

  • No Man's Land

A drama about the civil war in bosnia between the ragtag armies of both croatia and serbia with the UN french peace keepers somewhere in fray. Two serbian and two croatian soldiers come up against each other and are stuck between the lines in no mans land. The end game is the UN do too little and let the war go on. Enjoyable movie with dark humour about a war of xenophobia that all too often repeated around the world. Especially enjoyable because the movie I think is fair to both sides. Don't show the movie to croatian or serbian or bosian friends because they will argue about it and you will have a mini civil war again. :(
