ExamCram A+ study guide
I work as a helpdesk associate and decided it was time to get my A+. I've been working with computers since my early teens and have learned quite a bit, but never gained any certifications for anything as of yet. After working 6 years in human services, I decided it was time to do something fun and take advantage in my love for computers and tech. The company I was hired by was gracious enough to pay for my testing; we already have licenses to access Cybrary online material but I wanted to study the old-fashioned way: books, highlighters, and flash cards. Keep in mind that I've taken a couple computer courses back in college, but my degree was nothing computer-related and my experience is/was hands-on with a dash of Youtube tutorials on some things, Professor Messer included. So I picked ... I work as a helpdesk associate and decided it was time to get my A+. After working 6 years in human services, I decided it was time to do something fun and take advantage in my love for computers and tech. Keep in mind that I've taken a couple computer courses back in college, but my degree was nothing computer-related and my experience is/was hands-on with a dash of Youtube tutorials on some things, Professor Messer included. So I picked up this book after looking at some reviews. Right away, I noticed the material was easy to digest; each section is no more than 20 pages or so, and the exam-related material was put into its own sections so you knew what you would need to focus on (according to the author). I started feeling pretty good about the potential end results. I passed the practice exam that was included with the book on the first try; things were looking up. Then I took the practice test Cybrary had available... Easily a third of the questions went over material I had never seen before; none of that specific material was covered in this book. I had a mild freak-out; WHERE IS THIS MATERIAL IN THE BOOK? Keep in mind this was just the Core One material; I hadn't even set foot in the Core Two section of the book or even looked at the practice test for that section (I still haven't as of writing this). I had already spent 8 weeks studying the Core One section! I sat on it for a few days and spoke with my supervisor about it. I decided to then use the book for basic studies and fill in the gaps with the Cybrary course material. Coupled with the practice tests provided by Cybrary, my knowledge has increased greatly and I'm now passing the Cybrary practice tests (which are definitely harder than the ExamCram test). This book can be used as a supplement or for basic study AT BEST; it goes over much of the basic necessities, but only scratches the surface of the more complex subject matters needed to pass the A+ exam. It actually helped me better understand the Cybrary material, which was definitely more technical than the book. Having the opportunity to compare this book to the Cybrary course material (a very legit and helpful online resource I might add) and try out a real-deal test completely opened my eyes; it made me realize that study material for the A+ certification is like antivirus software in that there is no such thing as one tool that will do it all. As of this writing, I completed my A+ certification: I received a 799 (87%) on my Core 1 exam back in June of 2021 and a 776 (84%) on my Core 2 four months later. I will give the author credit of putting together a book that made sense and was easy to digest with a paced method of study for the basic beginner info because I really did learn things in this book. But if you're looking for a one-stop solution to pass the test, DO NOT rely on this book alone. There could potentially be better book options out there as well. Use more than one method like I did as it will give you a good comparison between those methods and which one might work better for you. Also, if one study material doesn't cover certain information well, the other material might do a better job.
