Teen actress Anne Hathaway gives an endearing performance in Garry Marshall's delightful Disney comedy, THE PRINCESS DIARIES. Assisted by such seasoned pros as Julie Andrews and Hector Elizondo (a Marshall regular), Hathaway shines here in her first major film role. She plays Mia, a high school misfit who has resigned herself to social invisibility. Mia and her best friend, Lilly (Heather Matarazzo), are outcasts. While Lilly relishes the role, Mia just wishes a cute popular boy she likes, Josh (Erik von Detten), would notice her. Mia's life changes dramatically when her grandmother (Andrews) contacts her and Mia finds out she is heir to the throne of Genovia, a small European country between France and Spain. The klutzy, socially awkward girl doesn't think she's up to the job, but she agrees to be coached in regal manners by her grandmother before deciding if she wants to become a princess. Marshall (PRETTY WOMAN) is clearly in his element directing this light, charming teen comedy. Andrews, perfectly cast as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, makes her character seem both imperious and caring. Hathaway's performance and the presence of teen pop star Mandy Moore assure that young girls, in particular, will enjoy the film.

    Fun But Overdone

    This is a cute movie with a great cast. A little silly in spots and overdone in terms of the "clumsy acts" of the Princess, but entertaining, for sure. The fast pace is good -- makes up for some of the redundant encounters. I'm very glad I saw it because the sequel, Princess Diaries 2, is a far better production in my opinion, and it was even more enjoyable having known "what had happened before" in the original film. I recommend this movie to those looking for a lighthearted escape from reality, with picturesque scenery and a wonderful performance by Julie Andrews.

    Accurate for storyline

    I have had this movie before and moved. It was lost in the move and I had to have another one. When I learned they would no longer be selling DVD packs I jumped into eBay and got a new one. Glad I did it the morning after announcement was made......alot were gone.

Enter Mia's estranged grandmother who just happens to be the Queen of Genovia! Mia isn't overjoyed to discover she is a princess and does not attend her 'princess lessons' without a fight. To top it off, Mia has only three weeks to learn how to act and look like royalty. Her comical transformation plays out on screen with much laughter, fun, and sheer enjoyment. On a more serious note, Mia also finds herself hiding from the media, dealing with jealous classmates and trying to thwart a plot to take over Genovia. This is such a cute movie, ...

    The Princess Diaries

    Personally, I love Anne Hathaway! I love her! She's my dream girl! And in this flick she's delightful, funny, clumsy, smart, clever, sweet, real, superb! It's a very nice plot also, very original idea, the princess hidden in San Francisco downtown. Julie Andrews is absolutely amazing, delightful and charming to watch, even to hear. That lady is just absolute elegance! The actress that plays Anne Hathaway's best friend is hilarious! A complete riot! In general, this is a good comedy, teen movie with a good message, great cast (Hector Elizondo among others), great directing by the legendary Gary Marshall and awesome acting. Very fun to watch; I'd say funnier than the sequel. Recommended.
