What do a down-and-out Broadway producer, his anxiety-attack-prone accountant, a go-go dancing Swedish secretary, and a Nazi playwright have in common? They're all part of Mel Brooks's wild and wacky first film, THE PRODUCERS. In this hysterical farce, rapacious but lovable producer Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) hasn't had a hit in years and resorts to fulfilling sexually crazed little old ladies' fantasies for extra cash. But when he meets his new meek, neurotic accountant, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), the two accidentally come up with a plot to oversell shares in a surefire flop musical and make off with the profits. The plan sends the new partners-in-crime on a search for the worst play ever: SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER, written by an ex-Nazi (Kenneth Mars) whose only friends are the filthy city pigeons he keeps on his roof. Inspired, manic performances by all involved, along with Brooks's lively direction--which affectionately alludes to such MGM Golden Age musicals as SINGIN' IN THE RAIN--make THE PRODUCERS both referential and highly original as it moves along swiftly to the ultimate musical climax.

I had already seen the movie but wanted to see it again because Mel Brooks had said on a National Television Interview show when asked by the host,"Mel,what gave you the idea for the film, and later the successful Broadway show". Mel told a little white lie. Oh I once worked for a producer that dated little old rich ladies in New York for a flop he deliberately produced to keep the dough for himself and partner." In fact he heard the story from Shelden Lenard his producer friend who in his book told the very funny story. This was because it was Lenard's first acting part a walk on role on the Bright White Way.. Broadway. in a play called, The Alimony Hotel. It was ... Same plot only this was a real one in 1934. It ran for 5 performances closed in one week never did a out of town preview to work out any bugs! Result,the play got very bad reviews. One old lady sued D.Stoner for "Breach of Promise" to wed her when the show he expected to be a hit. his lawyer was Eddy Peckerman a brand new Princeton attorney who became famous on wall street and in WW 11 as a Navy Admiral. Don Stoner won the case claiming he spend all the money on actors, set costs. Then after he won the trial. He went into silver mining in South America, during WW11 served in the OSS flying a DC3 himself to purchase strategic materials in Brazil such as Crystal for the war effort. Worked as US Gypsum Co representative in S.A,. Later owned an airline in Mexico,DF. Never produced any more shows. flops or otherwise. Enjoy the movie based on the real Producers. Still better than the Nathan Lane remake!!!
I saw this movie as a kid and laughed yself silly over and over again. When the musical remake came out I enjoyed it but not as much as the original. It seems in the remake that M.B. is trying to imitate Gene Wilder's Leo Bloom instead of acting on his own. And Wilder does sell a panic attack like no one else can. Anyway, Zanier, Crazier and somewhat Lazier than the musical remake this one is early Mel Brooks at his best - and giving the finger to everyone!I saw this movie as a kid and laughed yself silly over and over again.
