About this product

Product Information

A memorable entry in the genre of inspirational pedagogical films, THE CHORUS is an uplifting tale of a masterful teacher who put his heart into his work and changed the lives of his students forever. With a soundtrack of boys' singing, the lovely music of this film is the glue that will stick to viewers long after watching it. Set in 1940s rural France, at a school for poor boys who are delinquent or orphaned, the story feels timeless in the way that it captures a crucial moment in the lives of the boys involved. Ranging from early elementary school level to junior high, the boys struggle for independence and self-expression. They defy authority, especially when it comes from their brutally unfair and abusive headmaster, Rachin (Francois Berleand). And in general, because they feel neglected by their families, or don't have any family at all, there is something disjointed and sullen about the boys. Only after their teacher, Clement Mathieu (Gerard Jugnot), shows them that he will guide them, befriend them, and teach them by peaking their curiosity, not by insisting or punishing, do they begin to change. The choir he forms, and the songs he teaches the boys, become a source of pride for them, allowing them to rise above the confines of their meager and stifling school, and dream of a bright future. Director/writer Christophe Barratier has created a moving and beautiful film with more than a few life lessons hidden within. The music, written by Bruno Coulais, features the angelic voice of Jean-Paul Bonnaire, who plays Morhange in the film.

A+. The cost for the dvd and shipping were combined, which was great. The item was in great shape, as described. Quick response from seller. Item was sent Canada Post, to save costs, during the Christmas season so it took much longer than usual. No fault of the seller.

Thank you! Shipping was very fast. The seller graded it merely as "good", but I think it may be "very good". The price was low. It was protectively packaged for transport. I highly recommend this most trustworthy seller to all buyers without hesitation!

    A Truly Hearth-Warming Film!

This film had all of the features I would expect from a great film. It had a very talented cast, a superb storyline, delightful choral music--and HEART! It tells the story of a failed musician who is engaged as the prefect at a school for delinquent juvenile boys. He has such an engaging teaching style that the boys (though they test his patience) eventually come to respect him. The headmaster--a true tyrant in every respect--eventually gets his comeuppance. From the opening scene of the film to the closing credits, I was fully engaged (and, yes, even shed a tear or two at the end--not from sadness but from pure joy). If you're looking for a film that will stay with you for a long time, this is the one. No wonder it won several international awards. NOTE: My version was in the original ...

  • A great film

I loved the story. This is a very tender story about a music teacher who turns a rowdy boys school class into a choir in spite of opposition from the head master. You feel good at the end. The type of movie that you will want to watch over and over.

  • The best movie I've seen in 15 years

I've read about the dissatisfaction of some viewers with this movie because it apparently does not represent the typical French movie and has a Hollywood touch. Why every French movie shoudl be representative of the majority of films made in France is beyond my comprehension. Variety is a great thing even when it resembles another country's more cheery style. It seems that some people expected a more unexpected outcome and instead were dissapointed at its overall lifting and hopeful tone. Interestingly, its "happy ending" does not, in any way, take away the undeniable melancholy that permeates this film. Its presentation of both the god-like and putrid sides of the human being is, in my opinion, what makes this film worthy of permanent acclaim.

  • Great collectable DVD at a very good price.

Great out-of-print video, reminding me of my own school-teaching career decades ago. Brought tears to mine old eyes at the ending.
