A Worthy Read
Stylistically, for the first half of his book, Cremony's writing is strained and formal. He uses words that seem archaic today and most likely were not in common use even when the book was first published 165 years ago (e.g., contumelious, farinaceous, aliment, anti-scorbutic...). Halfway into this work, however, he finds his voice and winds up providing the most eloquent and credible description of the Apache people a reader of literature from this period could hope to find. Because of the date of this writing, I expected to encounter a laundry list of Apache atrocities, published primarily for shock value. Instead I discovered a solid, eye-witness account of their folkways, habits, and values. Cremony is surprisingly objective in his analysis of the Apaches he observed; and his analysis ... He also describes their strengths; and he clearly liked Apaches. Chapter 15 is a particularly eloquent portrayal Apache strengths. On the other hand, he wasn't deceived. He was acutely aware of how quickly an otherwise peaceful encounter with an Apache could suddenly turn dark. Finally, it is important for readers of the 21st century to know that Cremony was not "politically correct," by any measure. I am not sure where I found this, but in preparation for reading LIFE AMONG THE APACHES, I stumbled upon a quote from a soldier who served under Cremony's command that went something like this: "I don't believe anything the man ever said, except maybe 'I am thirsty for some whiskey.'" After reading this book, I am not surprised that a contemporary might take such an attitude. It seems likely that Cremony was a bit pompous and quick to share his opinions. On the other hand, he also seems to have been a thinker and a keen observer. This book is a word from our collective past that is well-worth reading. I highly recommend it!
