True love doesn't conquer all.
CARRIE is not so much the story of Carrie (Jennifer Jones) as it is George Hurstwood (Laurence Olivier). This film, released in 1951, was considered immoral and is not well-known today. Olivier delivers a stunning performance. So, surprisingly, does Eddie Albert as Charlie. Small-town girl Carrie goes to Chicago to live with her married sister, but when she is fired from her job, she is kicked out on the street. She moves in with Charlie, a charming travelling salesman. Carrie and Charlie are not passionately in love, but they get along well. Carrie is bothered by the fact that they are not married, which causes gossip. Charlie says he wants to marry her, but the time is never right. Charlie is genuinely busy with his job, and isn't bothered by the opinions of others; it is never ... Either way, Carrie feels uncomfortable with sex outside marriage. When she meets George Hurstwood, a rich man who wants to marry her, it's a dream come true. But George is so in love/lust with Carrie that he neglects to tell her he's married, and that the wealth is all in his wife's name. When Carrie finds out, she breaks up with George. But George steals money from his employer and tricks Carrie into running away with him, first by saying Charlie is badly injured and he's taking Carrie to the hospital, then admitting his lie but telling another lie, that his wife has divorced him. He and Carrie get married, but now that George is a bigamist and a thief, can it possibly end happily for him and Carrie? The interesting thing about this film is that Carrie is a nice girl, not a slut, and she really does love George. George believes he loves Carrie, but if you have to constantly lie to a person to keep them around, is that love, or obsession? CARRIE is thought-provoking because, unlike many films, it doesn't pretend that true love conquers all. Like real people, the characters in CARRIE make mistakes, or are forced to choose the lesser of two evils. Again, as in real life, those choices have consequences.

Carrie, a 1952 MGM feature, was lauded at the time of its release for pairing Lawrence Olivier with Jennifer jones. Both give solid performances, although the features needs stronger script direction. The feature lags at times. Elizabeth Taylor initially had been suggested for this role, but Jones is young enough to provide the innocence and provides enough give and take with Olivier to steer the feature and create an at times inspirational piece.Carrie, a 1952 MGM feature, was lauded at the time of its release for pairing Lawrence Olivier with Jennifer jones.
