Strange Anime with silly slapstick that makes you forget where you are ^_^
Strange, Strange, Strange. If you've never experienced Bobo bo bobo etc. etc. and you like odd strange humor this is probably for you ^_^. It's the type of instant slapstick that comes out of nowhere that keeps you guessing and that's the charm of this title. There's even a guest appearance of a popular character from another Shonen Jump Title (hint: Your Move!). It's rated older teen for excessive violence / blood but it's so silly and unnecessary it does not head toward a mature anime title at all (part of the Japanese pop culture's "charm". Now if you're familiar with the Bobobo cartoon that aired years ago on Cartoon Network you're in for a treat since I think the Manga and the anime work so well together they go hand in ... Watch the anime first.
I've been getting Shonen Jump since it was published. In one particular issue printed a few years ago, they had a preview of Bobobo. Apparently, many fans loved it, so they decided to bring it to America. What they didn't tell you is how far along in the story they would release it. This Bobobo graphic novel interrupts in the series towards the end, when Bobobo is going to take down Halekulani. Nothing in the book explains how he found his other companions, which means you'll definitely need to watch the anime to understand it. I appreciate some of the parodies and eccentric behavior, but there's a certain point where it becomes ridiculous. Bobobo can't die, and he can create a theme park out of nosehair? A very different manga...
I bought Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo Because I greatly enjoy the Cartoon Network anime. I have to admit it's an acquired taste. As they say, "Those who like that sort of thing will like this sort of thing." It's a no-holds-barred farce that rips at any and every martial arts anime series, especially "Fist of the Northstar" and the "Dragonball" series. Even "Yu-Gi-Oh" gets a cameo appearance, with the help of the creator of that series. If you like out-of-control comedy, satire, and farce, Bobobo is something you will enjoy thoroughly, especially if you enjoy seeing many of the conventions of manga and anime series poked fun at. If you take your anime too seriously, or have little sense of humor in your involvement with anime and manga, you will ... My only real criticism of this manga is that they appear to have started mid-way through the story arc in its translation, whereas I would have appreciated Volume 1 starting at the beginning of the story arc. It may be that there were difficulties in pirchasing the rights to it, or in translation, I don't know, but that is the biggest frustration I have with this manga. I also understand why many manga are printed in their original right-to-left format, but it also gives me a bit of a headache, and strikes me as something done more as hip for the Otaku or because the publisher is too lazy to re-format at times. I would say after reading the left-to-right "Lone Wolf and Cub" series and "Samurai Executioner" manga, that it suffers very little if at all in the reformatting process, and more than compensates for the whole reverse for a westerner issue. I hope Shonen Jump will publish more of the series, and perhaps start at its beginning. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is very, very unique and different from standard manga fare, and refreshing for those who tire of the trite and banal knock-off stories using the same basic plots and characters. A little breath of fresh air via satire and farce isn't a bad thing at all! In conclusion, if you like the anime, buy this, you'll enjoy it, it will make you smile and laugh- a lot. If you take things too seriously, stay away unless you like your stodgy sensibilities offended page after page. Enjoy!
