About this product

Product Information

THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE superbly achieves what few other movies do: a successful blend of thrills, style, comedy, drama, suspense and action. It is the precursor for many thrillers of the 1990s, from indie hits like Quentin Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS, and more popular, Hollywood vehicles like SPEED.The story focuses on four criminals who hijack a subway car and demand one million dollars from the mayor of New York, threatening to kill one hostage per minute if their demands aren't met. The hijackers are Mr. Blue (Robert Shaw), the crafty and efficient leader; Mr. Green (Martin Balsam), the train driver; Mr. Gray (Hector Elizondo), the hothead; and Mr. Brown (Earl Hindman), a nervous, stuttering man. New York City transit lieutenant Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) goes above and beyond his call of duty to play negotiator with the hijackers. The camera grabs the viewer by taking him down into dark gritty hallows of the subway tunnels and into the midst of the harrowing situation on the hijacked car. Based on the book by JohnGodey, TAKING OF PELHAM is a true classic that depicts the dark, crime-ridden climate of 1970s New York city.

  • Interesting crime drama in 1974 New York City

Set (and filmed) in New York City around 1974, this very good-to-excellent crime/hostage drama involves a group of men hijacking a New York City subway train, and holding a carload of hostages for ransom. Walter Mattau stars as the Transit Authority Police Lieutenant who, with his classic dry humour and sharp wit must battle the politics, red-tape, and rivalry between all the agencies involved, while all the time negotiating by radio with Robert Shaw, cast perfectly as the coldly deranged and dangerous leader of the hijackers. This movie is filled with comedy moments, too, such as the early scene where a group of Japanese transit execs are begrudgingly (and rudely!) given a tour by Matthau. Also, the New York stereotypes, from the constantly worrying Mayor (an Ed Koch look-alike), to ...

  • Great copy of a 70's classic that has has a raw feel and veteran acting!

Prefer this original version over the Travolta-Washington remake. While Denzel can do no wrong in my opinion, Travolta was too foul-mouthed and over the top in his performance of the cool-headed Shaw character. Matthau is at his grumbling growling best in this gritty '7o's action flick. I had not seen it in years but wanted to refresh my memory with the other cast members including Ben's dad Jerry Stiller and the put upon mayor of the city who is a dead ringer for Ed Koch at the time. Great blend of suspense and comedy with the best one liner coming from Garber when he first confronts Sgt. Daniels in the squad car!

  • 1970's NYC Moment

Throughout the 1970's, many films were shot in New York and in its city. From Klute to Three Days of the Condor. From Serpico to The French Connection. This film is also one of them. Based on the John Godey novel, it has actions, drama, suspense, thrills and, as the case is with many movie adaptations of novels, unpredictable deviations from the novel on which it was based. Plus, it has Walter Matthau, the actor who played Inspector Arboghast in Psycho and Hector Elizondo too.
