About this product

Product Information

Moscow, May 1876. What would cause a talented student from a wealthy family to shoot himself in front of a promenading public? Decadence and boredom, it is presumed. But young sleuth Erast Fandorin is not satisfied with the conclusion that this death is an open-and-shut case, nor with the preliminary detective work the precinct has done-and for good reason: The bizarre and tragic suicide is soon connected to a clear case of murder, witnessed firsthand by Fandorin himself. Relying on his keen intuition, the eager detective plunges into an investigation that leads him across Europe, landing him at the center of a vast conspiracy with the deadliest of implications.

"A galloping story of murder, suicide, deception, and disguise." Entertainment Weekly "As international as caviar and vodka! A crafty tale full of atmosphere, character, and action." • The Winter Queen-- as popular as Harry Potter??

When he gave the students in my "Post-Communist Russian Literature" class this book, my Russian expat professor said that the series written by Boris Akunin, starting with The Winter Queen, had comparable popularity to the Harry Potter series here. I found that difficult to believe of any book-- until I read The Winter Queen. It's sensational. The Winter Queen is a detective novel and quick read, but not at all pulpy or fluffy-- because even Russia's popular literature sneaks in Dostoevsky references, and because Akunin is a totally respectable writer. This book is so much fun! I have since purchased at least three copies (in addition to my own) to give to friends as gifts. This book is well worth your time and dollars. I only wish more of the books in the series were translated into ...
