About this product

Product Information

Terry Goodkind's Wizard's First Rule, Book One of A Sword of Truth, was "a wonderfully creative, seamless, and stirring epic fantasy debut." -Kirkus Reviews Piers Anthony lauded it as "a phenomenal fantasy, endlessly inventive, that surely marks the commencement of one of the major careers in the genre. It starts in early and keeps hitting you with new magical wonders, building into a truly gripping adventure." In Wizard's First Rule, Richard Cypher's world was turned upside down. Once a simple woods guide, Richard was forced to become the Seeker of Truth, to save the world from the vile dominance of Darken Rahl, the most viciously savage and powerful wizard the world had ever seen. He was joined on this epic quest by his beloved Kahlan, the only survivor among the Confessors, who brought a powerful but benevolent justice to the land before Rahl's evil scourge. Aided by Zedd, the last of the wizards who opposed Rahl, they were able to cast him into the underworld, saving the world from the living hell of life under Rahl. But the veil to the underworld has been torn, and Rahl, from beyond the veil, begins to summon a sinister power more dreadful than any he has wielded before. Horrifying creatures escape through the torn veil, wreaking havoc on the unsuspecting world above. If Rahl isn't stopped, he will free the Keeper itself, an evil entity whose power is so vast and foul that once freed, it can never again be contained. Richard and Kahlan must face Rahl and the Keeper's terrible minions. But first, Richard must endure the ministrations of the Sisters of the Light, or die from the pain of magic that is his birthright and his curse. While Richard undertakes the arduous journey to the forbidden city of the Sisters, Kahlan must embark upon a long and dangerous mission to Aydindril, citadel of the old wizards, where she hopes to find Zedd and the help only he can lend to their desperate cause. War, suffering, torture, and deceit lie in their paths, and nothing will save them from a destiny of violent death, unless their courage and faith are joined with luck and they find the elusive... • An excellent series brought to life

Leading off of "The Wizard's First Rule", "The Stone of Tears" maintains the standard of the first book. Terry Goodkind brought me into the world through an excellent use of descriptionall writing, not too boring and also doesn't lack detail. I found the story to be exciting, and I was unable to put the book down. Although it was predictable in places, he left me wondering what was going to happen in the end. He brought a final ending to the book, but is still able to carry on the series with other books. It is an excellent choice if you are willing to put in the time to read the entire series which now includes ten books.

  • Great Sequel to Wizards First Rule

I know there is a lot of criticism of this book as not being very original etc. But as a work of Epic Fantasy this one does stand above the majority. There might not be much amazingly new here, but Goodkind is a real storyteller. Things move on at a nice pace and the book gathers momentum towards the end, just like a good book should. The characters are interesting and even though very powerful are not without their faults. Goodkind also creates an interesting magic system in these books. It's the second book in the Sword of Truth series but could stand alone as there are not that many back story threads from Wizards First Rule. Even though there is a satisfactory conclusion to the book, it's obvious that there is more to come. The story is continued in the third volume in the series, ...

  • Cheap thrills, but thrills nonetheless

If you liked the first book, you'll probably like this one too. It has the same sexy sword and spell tone and the same focus on Richard and Kahlan's intense and angsty romance. It also has the same flaws. Overall, Stone of Tears is not very well constructed. Whenever Goodkind writes himself into a corner, some new magical spell or beastie that we've never heard of before shows up as a plot point ex machina. There's also a lot of sleaze. It isn't that the story involves sex, rape, violence and other prurient elements so much as that sex, rape and violence are slathered in on top of the plot for cheap thrills. Do NOT pick up this book expecting a universe that follows or even remembers its own rules. So when is it okay for authors to do this? When the book is still fun to read. If ...

  • Stone of Tears

This is by far one of the best fantasy writers of this era, nest to tolkien and some of the other bests. Goodkind really keeps readers involved and anxious with his descriptive, and intriguing writing style. I have literally stayed up for hours trying to find out what happens next. Truly an original piece of work, filled with a whole new world full of new creatures and new ideas, morals, and moral decisions. He gives great depth to his characters without boring you to death with insignificant details. This book seems to me to be an equal to that of Wizard's First Rule, and I enjoyed it to the very last page. Recommended Authors: Robert Jordan (Wheel of Time Series) George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire Series) L.E. Modesitt Jr. (The Saga of Recluce Series) Terry Goodkind (The Sword ...
