Cray Fowler (James Spader), the scion of a powerful and wealthy political family from St. Alban's Parish, Louisiana, has his budding career put in jeopardy when he's videotaped in an erotic sexual situation with a Vietnamese martial arts instructor at the Happy Dragon Studio. When the woman's father is found fatally stabbed, she is arrested and Cray returns to being a trial lawyer and defends her against a prosecuting attorney, who is also his ex-lover. But during the trial a plot is uncovered that involves an unsavory and shameful secret in his family's history, which he decides to bring out in the open. Based on the novel JURYMAN by Fran Galbally and Robert Macklin, STORYVILLE was directed and co-written by TWIN PEAKS co-creator Mark Frost.

JAMES SPADER, JASON ROBARDS & PIPER LAURIE: TWIST PLOTS
It's baffling to me why this terrific suspense/seduction drama hasn't been more well recognized. The younger & thinner James Spader plays the lead as Cray Fowler, who is a Louisiana candidate for congress. Piper Laurie plays his widowed mother, Constance. Jason Robards plays his boisterous & lush drinking, influential uncle. Charlotte Lewis plays the Vietnamese Akito Karate instructor who the married-but-separated Fowler (Spader) winds up with on videotape in a hot-tub--somehow. The videotape could ruin his bid for public office. But, there's much more to the plot than this: Fowler's father was a very wealthy & powerful man who wound up dead years ago in what was called a "suicide." His only son, Cray, is plagued by that part of his family's past. Therefore, he's an attorney who's on a ... The sex scenes are beautifully graphic, as Spader is noted for in most of his early films. Loverboy himself. Spader, Robards & Piper Laurie all portray extremely convincing characters. The movie's got just enough of a bit of everything in it. White collar crime, murders, hot sex, 3 great lead actors, family betrayal, good & bad guys & gals, money & a constant pursuit of justice. This is a terrific flick. The scenes where Spader & Robards go at each other truly highlight how talented both actors are. I'm deliberately not telling you the best parts of the story. Those you've got to experience for yourselves. Mind you, this isn't spine tingling high suspense. It's clever twisted plot & great dramatic suspense.

This movie got basically no theatrical distribution where I live back in '92, which is too bad, because it's a one-of-a-kind treasure as far as this kind of movie (the southern gothic) goes. It has great performances from Spader, Robards, and everybody else, and a plot and atmosphere definitely not of the cookie-cutter variety.
