Acceptable Sound; Rare Cable; Task the ECM-MS957 Appropriately
Based on other reviews I had read of this microphone I was expecting something special. I did not get it. The specs mention a lower range of 50 Hz, which was encouraging. I found the bass was thin and weak. It was decidedly lacking for recording acoustic guitar, both nylon and metal string. Since this was the main purpose of getting this microphone it has failed in its mission. This is an excellent microphone for voices and for higher frequency instruments. It is dead quiet, which is important. It has good stereo imaging. The supplied microphone cable is an XLR 5 pin female at the microphone that terminates in a 3.5mm three pole (stereo) male plug. These are rare and when available are quite pricey. This configuration is perfect for the recording equipment I am using but I dread what ... Construction of the microphone is solid. I have no issues with the build or ease of use. I would prefer an LED that remained lit while the microphone was on over the provided LED that briefly flashes when it is turned on. From a distance it is difficult to tell if it is on or not, just one more thing to have to re-check before a session. I believe I received a better balance over the frequency range I was recording from the Olympus ME51S. The ECM-MC957 was an improvement over the on camera microphones. To sum up the ECM-MS957 is an excellent choice for stereo recording of voices and upper register instruments. It is a quiet and well built device. It is a bit lacking in the lower frequncies but if properly tasked can give excellent results.

Excellent Stereo Microphone for Small Audio Recorders
Over the years, Sony made many one-piece stereo microphones. The ECM-MS957 was one of the last and the best. Used ones at a good price are a find. I found one, bought it and am pleased with it. It is built to high standards, sounds good and is ergonomically a good fit for portable recording with a stereo hand mic.

Great sounding mike
I can't compare this product to any other only that it's a different beast to the internal mikes on my Olympus LS11 pocket digital recorder,they are more sensitive, but this mike does a great job and sounds good
