About this product

Product Information

Roland Joffé's adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's seminal novel tells the story of an intolerant Puritan community in the early days of American settlement. In the 1660s, Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) makes the voyage to the New World in order to find religious freedom and a new home for her and her husband, Roger (Robert Duvall). However, Hester proves to be too free-spirited and strong-willed for most of the conservative Massachusetts Bay colony members. She abandons the laws of the colony and sets up a home far from the town square, living by her own rules and setting the townspeople's morals on end. While waiting for her husband's arrival from England, she befriends the town pastor, Arthur Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman), a liberal-minded and passionate man who instantly strikes Hester's fancy. Although the married woman and pious pastor are strongly attracted to one another, the two refuse to give in to temptation--until Roger is reported dead in a violent Indian massacre. When the townfolk hear about the ensuing scandal, they force Hester to wear a shameful scarlet "A" (for adultery) on her clothing at all times--while living as a moral and social outcast.

    The Scarlet Letter

Too much nudity and sex. I like the book better. Not sure why the ending was changed. The Nathaniel Hawthorne classic has Dimmesdale dying in Hesters arms. Much more romanric and dramatic. The main charcters were unexciting. Disappointi g.

  • Most Sensuous Version of the Classic Colonial Romance

Roland Joffé's (director) & Douglas Day Stewart (screenplay writer) take many artist liberties in their adaptation of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, "The Scarlet Letter." Released on 13 October 1995, Demi Moore & Gary Oldman star & steam up the silver screen. In 1666, Hester Prynne (Demi Moore) traveled to America seeking religious freedom & a homestead for husband, Roger Chillingworth (Robert Duvall) & herself. Joffé's remake of Hawthorne's story begins in the middle, with Hester (Moore) already out of jail with her infant & already wearing a large scarlet "A" for adulteress across her clothed bossom. Joffé's film starts out by telling what happened to lead up to Hester's conviction, imprisonment, sentence & pregnancy, which I believe improves the story considerably. My point being that ...

  • Faithful to the Hawthorne novel it is not.

Bought it to be used in parallel with the novel of same title. Teachers need to edit out the riske parts or plan in a way that you avoid the "R" scenes. The set and costumes are worth the viewing, but true to most film these days it's very short on character development. The physical appearance of Hestor could pass, but Dimmesdale is way off. I had vane hopes that it would give some attention to the events of "The Custom House" but come to think of it, how could that compete with the likes of Demi Moore? Possible saving feature is that it could be part of a study of novel to motion picture, AFTER studying Hawthorne's classic.

  • Passion and commitment romances anyone who watches this

I am not a demi moore fan, however in this role she displayed her aventurous spirit and commitment to her beliefs and virtue. Gary Oldman wow, I am in love. From the moment you met the character, his strenghth and depth as well as charisma lures and complells you to become involved. This man is who women seek to have a life with. From the rugid countryside, I followed the little bird to the forbidden place where love and passion explode.
