About this product

Product Information

An illustrated guide to identifying 200 Western mushrooms - whether edible, poisonous, or medicinal - by their key features. In leafing through these pages, you may wonder what all the 'fanciful, ' 'foolish, ' or (shudder) 'extraneous' material is doing in a factual guide. After all, it is the practical, hands-on, how-to-identify information that makes this book useful and gives it substance. But I ask: is it any stranger or less desirable to sprinkle the facts with flakes of fancy than it is to liven up solemn, substantial fare like potatoes with something fancier and more flavorful, like wild mushrooms? - David Arora All That the Rain Promises and More ] is certainly the best guide to fungi, and may in fact be a long lasting masterpiece in guide writing for all subjects. - Roger McKnight, New York Times

Great guide specific to the western USA

This guide is so easy to follow, makes mushroom identification fun and easy, starts with an easy flow chart for quick classification then points you to a few pages that narrow it down to the exact mushroom ! Wow! I'm so glad I got this. I love going for walks and photographing mushrooms but never knew what they were and people in "mushroom ID " Facebook groups are always such pricks about knowing more than you, this book is a must for anybody at any level of the hobby... later on buy the companion book "mushrooms demystified" by the same author, this book is an awesome field guide but will also give you page numbers for the bigger "mushrooms demystified" for far more in depth info. Get it today!!

  • Great little book!

First of all, the photo of the guy on the cover is hilarious. Im not sure what to say about him..haha. but, the contents of the book is amazing. In the future i would love to go mushroom foraging but for now i purchased the book just to learn more about mushrooms. Im a chef and in my industry its all about continuous learning, you will never know everything, so read, read, read. This book really details mushrooms i cook with every day and it gives me a little more knowledge of eavh type and why they are called what they are as well as ways to pick the best. If you are a forager, chef, or just looking to learn, rhis is the book for you. Happy Cooking!! Enjoy

  • Informative and Compact

I was looking for a book I could take hiking with me and use to identify mushrooms I happen to find. This is the first and only mushroom identification book I have used, but it is working out well so far and fits nicely in my backpack or even a big sweater pocket. I bought a copy for my brother too, and between us we (seem to) have identified green parasol, fly agaric, oyster and Zeller's bolete mushrooms. I can usually find what I am looking for in the color photographs, but if not I can resort to the classification guide inside the cover. It just rained for the first time this fall last weekend so I look forward to using this guide a lot more soon.

  • Great little field guide.

Great little portable companion of Arora's bigger "bible" mushroom reference book which is too big to carry in the field. Lots of useful info and photos. Highly recommended.

  • Pocket Size Book great for hicking. Wide (but not complete) mushroom catalogue.

The Book is great to be kept in the pocket while hiking. The description of mushrooms is pretty good and clear but not all the mushrooms are displayed or listed (comes to mind the suillus lakei, and the lepista nuda). Good companion for quick references and later cross-reference with other guides
