I used the Solas cross reference tool for identifying the correct part number. Unfortunately after receiving the part, the spline count did not match. The seller was good with returning the part, but I lost close to $50 based on shipping and other costs. The seller’s description did say not responsible for shipping, but I also struggle with how this is my fault. A couple of hints to make it work longer...
Mercruiser trim senders have always been prone to water infiltration so here's what I did to help prevent - or at least delay - that day: 1) use a small amount of RTV sealer under the plastic part that holds the wires where they go into the sender body. Loosen the screw and force a very small amount under that retainer making sure it gets in and around the wires and then tighten the screw and, 2) use di-electric grease on the 2 o-rings on the new sender rotor, not Mercruiser grease. Di-electric grease will prevent water intrusion as well as any other grease, but with the added protection of not harming the sender contacts if some should get inside - which it can. A dab is all you need. Then carefully insert the sender rotor as per the instructions (which are not very clear: the ... Be clean, tidy and careful and the new sender should give you years of service. And this, if you operate in salt water, clean and replace the di-electric grease on those 2 o-rings annually. Not a bad idea for fresh water boats either. Enjoy!
