Classic Trek: Accept No Imitations!
I am buying individual DVDs of this series as I can find and afford them because I really don't feel the need to have season sets, especially of the 1st and 3rd seasons, which were of erratic quality, at best. And for the DVDs, I'm focusing first on those that feature two episodes I like rather than just one. I'm an old-line Star Trek Classic fan, dating from the 70s and earlier, when I first started watching TOS, and this DVD features one of the best episodes ("Balance of Terror") and one so-so episode ("Charlie X"), but both are enjoyable to watch. "Balance of Terror" is one of the best battle stories of the series and guest stars Mark Lenard (later famous for playing Sarek, Spock's Vulcan father) as one of the most 3-dimensional villains to ever appear in screen SF at the time; it ... "Balance of Terror" is one of the best battle stories of the series and guest stars Mark Lenard (later famous for playing Sarek, Spock's Vulcan father) as one of the most 3-dimensional villains to ever appear in screen SF at the time; it deals suspensefully and dramatically with themes of war, prejudice and suspicion and is on many fans' (including this one's) favorite episode list. "Charlie X" is not as interesting but more original, the story of a space-wrecked human boy left alone on an unknown planet and raised by aliens but later found and brought, probably via several different Federation ships, to be transported the rest of the way to an Earth colony by the Enterprise; trouble begins when they discover that the now-teenage boy has been taught to develop and use supernatural powers by these aliens, and he uses them to wreak havok on Enterprise crewmembers any time he gets upset or confused (principle targets being Yeoman Janice Rand, upon whom he develops a hopeless first-love crush, and later Kirk, who becomes his chief mentor, advisor, and eventually reluctant opponent, fighting him for control of the ship and of his crew). Both episodes are good examples of why there will never be another Star Trek for some of us, the 5 follow-on series notwithstanding.

Charlie X feature then little known actor Robert Walker Jr son of the much acclaimed actor Robert Sr, whos credits included the award winning film Strangers on A Train plays the role of Charlie Evans. After being picked up from the spaceship Antares Kirk and his crew find themselves in a deadly game of cat and mouse as they try to deal with Charlie and his ever increasing growing pains. As Charlie begins to run more and more amuck acting out in typical adolescnt fury Kirk and Spock are hard pressed to contain his out burst. Just at what seems to be their wits end and Charlie has taken over they ae resued by the very beings who made Charlie what he is. Appearing as whipst of smoke the explain ... He and Mark Leonard put on ecellant performaces as two battle harden vets. A must to add to any collection.
