About this product

Product Information

A haunting memoir by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, All Over but the Shoutin' presents a gripping account of people struggling to make sense and solidity of life's capricious promises. As he tells the wrenching story of his own family's life in the dirt-poor Alabama hills--where he got out, but has never been quite about to leave--Bragg attempts to both atone for and to avenge the mistakes and cruelties of his past.

Reviews
"An absolutely wonderful book." --Russell Baker "Rick Bragg writes like a man on fire. AndAll Over but the Shoutin'is a work of art. While reading this book, I fell in love with Rick Bragg's mother, Margaret Bragg, a hundred times. I felt like I was reading one of the prophets in the Old Testament when reading parts of this book. I thought of Melville, I thought of Faulkner. Because I love the English language, I knew I was reading one of the best books I've ever read. By explaining his life to the world, Rick Bragg explained part of my life to me. You feel things in every line this man writes. His sentences bleed on you. I wept when the book ended. I never met Rick Bragg in my life, but I called him up and told him he'd written a masterpiece, and I sent flowers to his mother." --Pat Conroy "Searingly honest, beautifully written,All Over but the Shoutin'is perhaps the most courageous thing Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Rick Bragg has ever written. Making his reputation on his "dark gothic" stories of urban riots, community disasters, and Haitian bloodbaths, Bragg has never failed to record the grace and dignity of people who live their lives in the margins. All Over but the Shoutin'is one more such story. But it is braver because the marginal people he gives us are himself, a child of "poor white Southern trash," and his family--an alcoholic, mostly absent father, and an extraordinary mother, quietly heroic in the face of devastating poverty. Bragg looks down the corridors of his past with love, hate, humor, regret, self-doubt, and understanding. In the telling, he may occasionally flinch, but he never turns away." --Willie Morris, "An absolutely wonderful book." --Russell Baker "Rick Bragg writes like a man on fire. All Over But the Shouting

This is a great read, good old down to earth reading, I haven’t completed it due to a hospital stay, but can’t wait to get back to the contents. A very good writer who takes you back home to life in the south!! I am loving. I had hoped it came in large print which I found out it does, but was too expensive to buy in larger print.

  • A memoir good enough to last the passage of time

Great memoir from a writer who knows how to tell a story with detail and emotion. A bit surprising to see such a great transition from newspaper writing to a book, but Bragg is the rare hug who can do both. Great look at life of poor folks in the rural South who learned to live with the lives they inherited while still trying to make things better...humorous, sad, inspirational. Two decades in, it’s still a must-read.

  • One of the best books I have ever read. I have laughed until tears were rolling down my face.

Awesome book. Well written, honest, heart rendering, funny, loving, and all round great book. Being from the south, I relived many parts of my life. I do not want this book to end. I have loved. My friends are waiting for me to loan to them.

  • All Over but the Shoutin'

This is a wonderful book about the richness of life in the South, even in the midst of (or maybe because of) poverty, violence, hate, prejudice, loneliness, alienation and too much alcohol. Ricky Bragg wrote the book to honor his mother, which he does beautifully, but in doing so, he also captures the importance of "family", with all its dysfunctional characters, in Southern Life. It's not always pretty, but it is entertaining, emotional, thought-provoking and beautifully written. A great book which I highly recommend.

  • Terrific book. Can not praise this author enough.

Just discovered Rick Bragg. Absolutely one of the best.
