George Stevens presents his monumental adaptation of the story of Jesus Christ starring Max von Sydow. The film concentrates on the most familiar episodes of the biblical story, including the birth of Christ in Bethlehem, Herod's (Jose Ferrer) decree of the execution of all male children in Judea, and the Holy family's escape into Egypt. It continues as Christ encounters John the Baptist (Charlton Heston) searches for the Twelve Apostles, and raises Lazarus (Michael Tolan), while John the Baptist is executed. It concludes with Jesus' expulsion of the moneylenders from the temple, the instruction of the Apostles at the Last Supper, Christ's betrayal by Judas (David McCallum), the Passion, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The product of years of research and planning by Stevens, the film features a huge cast of stars, among whom Von Sydow, McCallum, Dorothy McGuire (Mary), Sidney Poitier (Simon of Cyrene), Claude Rains (Herod the Great), Donald Pleasence (The Devil), Martin Landau (Caiaphas), and Janet Margolin (Mary of Bethany), give fine performances.

Great movie, highly recommend it to any and everyone!
Great movie & love that it keeps pretty close with the bible. I had seen it many years ago and did not even realize that Max Von Sidow played the part of Jesus, he did an excellent job.

Bible Wanna Be
This is a great story for people who aren't really into Christianity or the Bible. Hollywood took the Bible, almost read the 4 gospels, rewrote it into one story and edited and added as they thought it would work best for the screenplay, and found many superstars for a cast, some very unfit for their parts, but still entertaining. The additions are the devil (Donald Pleasence) who shows up repeatedly throughout the movie. (I had to laugh out loud when John Wayne's silhouette and voice came in at the foot of the cross, I'm sorry, that didn't work.) Also, Max von Sydow totally misses the spirit of Jesus, being far too bitter, unsympathetic, and serious. Nobody would have followed him. Well, the movie is still worth watching, if only to see all the great cast and scenery, which Hollywood can ... This is a great story for people who aren't really into Christianity or the Bible. Good, as hollywood religious epics go.
I can only echo what has been said somewhere else: this movie has the flaw of casting familiar faces just for the fun of it (as commercial hook, if you will) no matter that they don't fit the part. The parade of familiar faces (hollywood faces of the 50's and 60's) becomes distracting, which is a shame, because the rendition fo the story is honest, beautifully photographed in very amazing landscapes. The formal and sometimes stiff acting and dialogues is something that characterized all hollywwod epics back then, so I won't point it as a particular flaw here. Now, there never was (and hasn't been since then) a better depiction of the life of Christ like JESUS OF NAZARETH (Franco Zefirelli, 1977), and THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD is a proof of that. Still, I would recommend either one of ... I love the old movies, now that I am renewed in christ
My life was very sin full and as a new man threw Jesus Christ our lord I have new desires and love the path I am on leading to everlasting life.
