About this product

Product Information

Inspired by a true story and the hit Japanese film NANKYOKU MONOGATARI, Frank Marshall's (ALIVE, CONGO) EIGHT BELOW captures a rugged world of ice, snow, and threatening weather that few will ever experience in person. As a guide for a National Science Foundation Research Base in Antarctica, Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) is perfectly content to spend his time exploring the wilderness with his sled dogs and goofing around with his best buddy, cartographer Charlie Cooper (Jason Biggs). Then UCLA geologist Davis McLaren (Bruce Greenwood) arrives at the camp with plans for a risky expedition: treacherous ice fields make his target destination accessible only by dog sled so late in the season. Soon Shepard, McLaren and the sled dogs--Maya, Max, Old Jack, Buck, Shorty, Dewey, Shadow, and Truman--are on their way in search of McLaren's prize: a meteorite from Mercury.Unfortunately, an approaching storm forces Shepard and McLaren to return to base early. The return trip proves life-threatening, but the dogs pull through, saving both Shepard and McLaren from certain death. The storm also forces the scientists to leave the research center earlier than planned, and there's no room on board bush pilot Katie's (Moon Bloodgood) plane for the dogs. With the promise that someone will return for them immediately, Shepard leaves his beloved dogs behind. Soon, however, it becomes apparent that the weather has made a return trip impossible. Can the dogs survive in the Antarctic wilderness on their own, or will Shepard get back in time to save them? The dogs emerge as the most intriguing characters in the story, each exhibiting a distinct personality and fierce loyalty. The other major player is the wilderness itself, a beautiful, mysterious world that is rarely depicted on film.

    Eight Below.

The eight sled dogs are extremely smart and exemplify the community love life together in the very cold south pole winter winter environment. The humans could learn something out of this picture.

  • Eight Below doggies

As big dog fans and a recent Dog Sled trip in Canada, working with the dogs harnesses, and feeling how hard the dogs work and bark with excitement when time to run, we really were excited to see this Eight below movie. As a huge Orca lover, I did not care for the killer whale scene much, but understood the strive for survival in & after the storm for the dogs long winter months alone. It showed the food chain in play making it more real for the hungry dogs, who worked together to get their lunch. We Absolutely loved the dogs; their determination, teamwork, playfulness, and camaraderie, especially when one of the dogs got hurt or lost, or someway were left behind in the storm. They all seemed to look after one another, without all the hollywood google eyes and exaggerated smirks & smiles ...

  • Very exciting and well-made movie!

If you're a dog lover, you're sure to love this movie! But even if you don't especially like animals, you may enjoy the storyline. "Eight Below" was superbly cast with a great script. It has a pleasant blend of humor and touching affection, as well as extreme suspense and excitement. The plot is definately gripping, and the Arctic scenery is stunning! Awesome acting and excellent photography. The dogs are all absolutely gorgeous, you'll fall in love with them at first sight! The story is about a man who, due to an accident, must leave his dogs in the cold Arctic weather and fly out by helicopter. Most of the movie is about his efforts to return to see if the dogs survived. This is a gripping family film.

  • Eight Below- 2006

Eight Below is based on a true story that involves 8 sled dogs in the Antarctic and the guide who was forced to leave them stranded there. The movie starts out strong with the acting and the dogs are a joy to watch with their different personalities and their very different interaction with the "humans" they have to work with. Without giving too much away about the movie and what happens, I really enjoyed the movie for the most part. However, they went alittle too far in speculating about what happened with 2 of the dogs and even though the Leopard Seal scene was interesting to watch, I didn't buy it. The different bird hunting scenes were very interesting and believable and were tastefully done. Towards the end of the movie, you are really hoping that help comes soon for the dogs and ...

  • Dogs steal the show.

The dogs are the best thing about this movie. They do make you fall in love with this movie even though the acting isn't anything special, however, Jason Biggs is pretty funny. As with all "inspired by real events" movies, it strays far from the real truth. It is based on the 1983 movie "Antartica", if you google it you can find out what REALLY happened. Even the timeline in the movie which they make look true is wrong. The dogs were actually left for LONGER than the movie states. Of course this is Disney and they have to make everything a little (or a lot) better than real life. That being said, this is a good movie that you will want to watch over and over.
