Sheriff Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey) is a legend in the Texas border town of Frontera, the archetypical hero who supposedly saved the town from corruption. The discovery of a 40-year-old murder, however, threatens to tarnish Deeds's reputation and upset a fragile community riven between whites, Latinos, and blacks. LONE STAR follows the murder investigation through the lives of several characters, including the Latina schoolteacher, Pilar (Elizabeth Peńa); the African American colonel, Delmore (Joe Morton); and Deeds's estranged son, Sam (Chris Cooper), who is the town's current sheriff. At times recalling the structure of CITIZEN KANE, LONE STAR presents many different views on the morally ambiguous character of Buddy Deeds. However, the film is primarily about how Frontera's residents deal with the complex, often violent history they have inherited and the borders they must cross to live in peace. As with his earlier film, CITY OF HOPE, director John Sayles juggles complex race and class issues with ease and shows that the political is often the personal.

The film is first rate on every level. One critic said it right when he said he had only one lament, not a criticism because the film is PERFECT. His lament was, the character of Buddy Deeds was done so well, he wished the character had more screen time. A GREAT film

"Lone Star" keeps you thinking
"Cold Case" meets the modern Wild West in Frontera, Rio County, Texas. To set the stage, Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) is the son of legendary and revered Sheriff Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey). The elder Deeds became sheriff in the late 1950s after the mysterious disappearance of the despicable Sheriff Charlie Wade (Kris Krostofferson). As the film opens, workmen are inspecting a long deserted Army rifle range in preparation for future development and in typical "Cold Case" style come across skeletal remains and other artifacts. Forensics subsequently identifies those remains as Wade. Sheriff Sam then launches his own investigation to determine the exact circmstances of Wade's death. This leads him to visit many living old timers and relatives of various deceased. Their ... "Cold Case" meets the modern Wild West in Frontera, Rio County, Texas. The more he delves, the more he finds his father was no angel and may even be the murderer. But unlike a 1-hour TV show, there are other things going on in town besides Sam's inquisition. Frontera is a racial hotbed, as Mexican-Americans and African-Americans make whites a minority. There's his romantic interest since high school, Pelar (Elizabeth Pena), who is now a teacher and is faced with a battle over revisionist history in the curriculum. You also have illegal immingration, the impending closure of the Army base which will negatively affect the local economy, politicians pushing for an unnecessary new jail, and dysfunctional families. With so many characters to develop and so many stories to tell, this film runs 135 minutes. And it doesn't drag. Some things I especially like: Snappy dialogue and witty comebacks. These are not limited to any one person, either. There are visits to the El Vaquero Drive-In Theatre, both in operation (playing a teen slasher movie) and in present day abandonment. And in a unique cinematic method, a song is used to show the cultural divide. At the black nightclub you hear R&B artist Ivory Joe Hunter singing his original "Since I Met You Baby". Later, in the cafe owned by Pelar's mother, the jukebox plays the same song but in Spanish, "Desde Que Conosco" by Freddie Fender. Even the end credits, which are not overly long, are not a waste. My introduction to a vintage singer: Way before there was Hannah Montana, even before there was Patsy Cline, there was Patsy Montana. Her 1935 signature song "Cowboy's Sweetheart" plays as the credits roll. This effectively leaves you with the concept that in Rio County, Texas, the past is still important. You will find Lone Star a movie you will think about for a long time.

Never remember hearing or seeing this movie. Matthew McCaunehey was so young! Good story and note of Chris Cooper as sheriff was so understated. Was a real surprise. Dvd in excellent condition. Thanks.

Good title; name of a bar.
Lone Star is one of those sleeper movies that don't get much attention but stay around for years. We had many discussions about the characters and definitely debates over the ending. It is a keeper
