About this product

Product Information

The Bell Jaris a classic of American literature.  Originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963--only a month before the author's suicide--Sylvia Plath's harrowing autobiographical novel traces a young woman's descent into an emotional breakdown.  The brilliant and disturbing story of Esther Greenwood's journey from the glamorous world of magazine publishing in New York to the isolating world of the asylum has become one of the most famous books of the late twentieth century, and still has all its power to shock and move us.

  • the most striking, haunting book i've ever read.

It's hard to not be obsessed by this book. It's alot of psychology...thinly veiled autobiography. the honesty is what got me. It's hard to admit that you have psychological disorders...let alone write, in detail about trying to kill yourself and your obsessions. THe main character, Esther, is a great medium to learn about Plath. Her writing is impeccable and when I first read it, I wished she had lived to write more prose. It's a beautiful and stunning piece of work. Just as pleasing to hear and read as her poetry. If you like emotional work, if you can handle raw hate and despair, you need to read this. It changed my writing style. If you're a writer, you REALLY need to read this. Buy the hardcover, cuz you'll read this more than once.

  • The Bell Jar is Fantastic.

Even though the book is supposed to non-fiction, it's really a look inside the life of the mentally disurbed author. Sylvia Plath committed suicide 2 months after this book was published. It is intersting to read the story of a suicidal person, written by a suicidal person. It's one of the best books I've ever read.
