This is a great album
With Are You Ready, BLUE RODEO returns to a simpler sonic atmosphere of their earlier works. This album is full of great music. Opener Can't Help Wondering Why feels freshly minted. It's a characteristic running throughout the album. The results appear effortless, as though songwriting expands as much energy as completing a shopping list. For this band, variation is always a strength. After the rhythm and blues of the title track comes the prototypical country rock song Rena, and it's a credit to the band that something so musically conventional feels rejuvenated. Add to this the pretty ballad I Will and an interesting take on jealousy in Phaedra's Meadow, which correlates the modern day with Greek mythology, and, for a country rock album, this album proves to be an eclectic mix. And all ... With Are You Ready, BLUE RODEO returns to a simpler sonic atmosphere of their earlier works. This album is full of great music. Opener Can't Help Wondering Why feels freshly minted. While Keelor hoarsely rasps out "Like the moonlit shadows on a snow-covered field where the wind knows no mercy, and she howls and she reels", guest musician Bryden Baird blows the trumpet in plaintive counterpoint. It's reminiscent of those moments in spaghetti westerns just before the big gunfight when tension is rising to a crescendo. This is brilliant. This is a reassuringly enduring album.
