Great Hybrid Touch Screen Crossover
I bought one of these to replace my DCR TRV30. The specs for the video and audio are the same. The reason I prefer the TRV50 are the extra and extremely useful feature set. These improved features include a laser focus assist for low light and no light still pictures, and can take stills in complete darkness. The flash pops up, the red cross hatch laser bars show up on the object, and you have a good "in focus" color still. Laser was the best low light focus system out there, but sadly discontinued after the TRV80 because of the cost. The second improvement is the ability to touch the screen at the point you want the proper exposure to be. This feature is also used for focus, called "spot focus". Both work extremely well. This camcorder splits the controls with a touch screen, and ... I bought one of these to replace my DCR TRV30. The specs for the video and audio are the same. I like this combo because it gives me the ability to still use the scroll wheel for the menu options, and the buttons for playback. The reason this is important, is because if the LCD ever goes bad, you can still use the view finder to change the menu, use playback buttons, and still be able to command other features. Manufactures that put all the functions and controls on the LCD can be a huge problem when there's an LCD issue. Plus it costs them less to make, and also sell you a new camcorder after the warranty is up. The camera is very comfortable to hold. Not too heavy, and not too light. Cameras that are too light, can cause camera shake because a certin amount of mass is nessessary to hold it steady. And last but not least, it's a tape bassed camera. Why pros still use tape? It's basically uncompressed, good quality media, and has the most info on it for editing. After all, you can always drag a tape across a head and often Fix/splice them too. But when a hard drive crashes, (and they eventually will) a memory card (flash drive) goes bad or has a "file error", or a DVD gets scratched, you're out of luck (SOL)! Memory sticks are only guaranteed for about 10 years, and who knows about Home Made DVD's. I wouldn't rely on a 25 cent blank DVD if my life depended on it. Also, I hope all you hard drive guys out there download your stuff regularly and not let hours build up on your newer machines and one day find out it has an "issue". Digital Tape has a shelf life of at least 50 years and you always have the "Raw Stock" for editing in the future. So I recommend this camcorder for anyone that want's to make home movies, with easy transfer via firewire to computer to make movies, or just make a copy to DVD to hand out to friends.
