MSI 870-G54, Great motherboard.
They call it gaming MB but really it is just basic with 2 PCIE slots, crossfire outfit. The quadcore I have works great and I also got a nice AMD Radeon 6800 which works well. The price is basically budget and everything works that I have tried. The board has some nice features built into it like unlocking cores but I do not need this, also the overclock works pretty good. I got my 955 doing 3.5 and probably could push it even more but have not found a reason to do so. Graphics are clean, I hold 60 FPS in Crysis 2 with max setting in 1920 by 1200, enuf said I think. Oh I do have 12 gig of 9 9 9 24, actually one set is 7 7 7 but since the other does not run this I just go with the first and run it at 13000 mhz for memory front side speed. The cool thing is my board was used and it had a front side out, werll you can plug it in somewhere else and use it as the front, nice feature from realtek. So far I have no complaints about this board and I think ASUS and MSI are both good brands but MSI has never really let me down with releasing boards that have too many future bios upgrades needed like ASUS likes to do, but they have great customer support if you call at the right time, lol, they have always been way good to me so can't complain. Gained performance but could have better 12V power supply plugs position.
I bought this MSI 870AG54 motherboard so as to get also a AMD Phenom II x4 3Ghz CPU. My old motherboard could only fit a AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800+ 2.4Ghz skt 939. The graphics card I already had was a Palit (Nvidia chipset) GTS 450. I could not get the full potential of it from the old motherboard and CPU. When I installed the motherboard I found that the extra 12V plugs from the power supply connected in such a position that the cable either had to go under the bottom of the power supply fan or at the edge of the power supply close to the fan grill, secured with tape to the power supply case. In this position I later found, that when closing the computer case, the side of the case pushed against the cable and could cause a sudden power mal connection which would shutdown the system. Part of the reason was I had a 2cm thick inner sponge rubber lining on the case side to cut down noise. So it was with quite a bit of repositioning exactly where this cable went before this was sorted. It would have been easier if the extra 12V plug fitted nearer the 20+4 pin ATX plug. Along the back edge of the motherboard. I have found the last three mother boards, I have used have the plug in this awkward position. It seems to be the common way for motherboard makers. It would not matter much if the power supply fan was not on the bottom but at the back but better power supplies have this on the bottom. After installing and connecting everything up I booted into Windows 7. I also have other operating systems: Linux Ubuntu 10.04 and Debian 6.04. Also Haiku R1 alpha 3. I did not reinstall Windows even with such a major hardware change. Before shutting it down from the previous motherboard I had uninstalled most of the drivers so that it would not balk at the change. After all the new drivers were installed I tested to see how much I had gained with the new motherboard and other devices in 3DMark06. The score was twice what I had before with the old motherboard and other devices. Before I was only in the 7000's range now I was in the 14000's range. The main reason for the upgrade was to get better performance in FlightGear and SecondLife. In Secondlife I definitely got much better performance. Before the fps were from around 5.5 to 21. Now they were 25 to 75. In FlightGear the fps before were from 4 to 60. When there was a lot of cloud the fps went way down. When clear they would be high. I still found much the same after the upgrade except when at high altitude and clear skies the fps were 120 to 220. There might be a problem with the threading in FlightGear that prevents it making efficient use of more CPU cores. So I am reasonably pleased with the performance gain. Where I am not pleased might be more a software problem. Some of the attributes of the motherboard I have not tried yet. Like over-clocking. I did try to unlock the hidden cores of the CPU. I did this from the MSI Windows app BIOS Unlock. It did give me an extra two cores from my 4 core CPU. They never seemed to give me extra advantage in Windows with SecondLife and FlightGear. In fact there seemed less advantage. When I tried SecondLife with the unlocked cores in Ubuntu it did give a lot more advantage but FlightGear was the same as before in Ubuntu, a bit lower advantage in Windows 7. I have found unlocking the extra core either does not work or it causes instability with this CPU and another I have tried. So it is a matter of luck. AMD disables these cores for a reason, in some CPU's.

Easy install, great running
I got it for my husband's computer which quit working from some unknown problem. He insisted this was the only motherboard he would run. Because he had built his computer from the ground up, I knew he had good reasons for wanting this one. It installed easily, he was up and running in no time. He came out smiling like a little boy who just got his first bike. I don't know much about motherboards so no technical stuff.
