  • Winslow Homer on another level

I recently read an article in "Smithsonian" magazine about the exhibit of Winslow Homer's watercolors in Chicago. The article put emphasis on the techniques used by Homer in his watercolor paintings. Curious to read more about that, I decided to purchase the book from the exhibition. To start with, I was very pleased to find the the number, quality, and variety of the paintings represented. Just as an art book for browsing, it is a terrific collection of Homer's watercolor work. The book is organized around the techniques and materials that he used, with some discussions on how time has affected some of his works (fading, etc.). This is an approach I have not seen before, and one I thought added a nice perspective to his work. The book also offers a nice overview on Homer as an ...

  • Awesome, landmark exhibition; equally awesome catalog!

My museum lent an object to this landmark exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. I was able to tour it on its last open day, and can only say "Wow...the best. Homer is seen as never before, as the authors examine his techniques in depth, revealing to us for the first time to this extent how he developed his methods and accomplished his magic on paper and on canvas. He was truly America's master painter." This excellent catalog reproduces the exhibition's theme as no other, and is a fantastic source for all of us.

  • Watercolors by Winslow Homer, The Color of Light

I purchased this book, because I paint; not as often nor as well as I would like, none the less, I paint. Since I paint in both oil and watercolor, a book about Winslow Homer was a natural. I was hoping for some good color plates, and possibly something additional I could learn from. What a great surprise. This book has it all. Wonderful color illustrations and clear and concise information on Homer's paint, paper and technique. I have never been more satisfied with any purchase. This is a great book and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
