The special edition of Lords of Magic continues the travails of the role-player in the land of Urak with offerings of new quests, monsters, buildings, guard towers, buildings and legendary creatures. Combining turn-based exploration, real-time combat and resource management, the game builds on concepts introduced in an earlier Impressions Software title, Lords of the Realm. In addition to the original game, this edition contains five new Legends of Urak quests: Scepter of the Lich, Dragon's Hoard, The Eternal Flame, The Holy Grail, and Siegfried and Brunhilde. After selecting one of three lord types (warrior, mage or thief) and one of eight faiths (divided between elemental and arcane), you lead a party consisting of up to nine units and three Champions in your quest to defeat the evil Balkoth and his minions. Although designed as real-time combat, battles can be stopped at any time to issue orders, ready spells and re-position units, with the planned actions occurring immediately upon resumption of gameplay. Magic is divided into four spell books (attack, defense, overland and general knowledge) and is complemented by additional magic scrolls, potions (healing and mana), artifacts, and items. Gameplay elements encompass alliances, espionage, trade, thievery, stealth, interrogation of prisoners, and bribes (gifts) among others. The manual contains a healthy section on strategies and tips, background sections on the history, beliefs and religions of Urak, spell and artifact appendices, and unit charts. The new Lord Editor allows customization and creation of new characters or modification of existing lords including addition or removal of spells, units and artifacts, resource alteration, and starting conditions of buildings. The map editor, available in the original edition, provides two modes for adjusting the game through terrain (topography of the world map as well as creation of new worlds) and sprites (define and place capitals, temples, starting locations, combat encounters and more). Lords of Magic: Special Edition offers immersive gameplay in the realm of magic and chaos. Buildings evolve, units gain experience, factions clash, magic flashes, and swords ring as the ultimate battle to rid Urak of evil continues unabated with the likes of Beowulf, Merlin and your imagination.

a cool old school RTS game with decent music, it's kind of fun and very straightforward. unlike most RTS games like CIV3 and newer, there aren't a huge amount of resources to manage. it's primarily a D and D style military units game with knights/cavalry, warriors/macemen, archers/rangers, theives/scouts, and special critters like drakes/dragons, fairies and whatnot. There's a nicely made world map with mildly cool graphics for the era, but it's not going to impress you, as it's all pretty low-res fare. this is an old game, circa 1996 or so, and so your expectations should be reasonable for the graphics and overall content. this game CANNOT compete in any way with modern games. But it can make for a decent night's fun when your completely bored of all your other games. There's really nothing to frustrate you about the game, your only resources are fame, gold, ale, and crystals, each having an exchange rate, and each used to offset various effects of combat, or a system of gaining followers that you can use as laborors to create more resources or build an army (your population). All units have different levels of upkeep and require different resources to maintain their service. There are also randomly spawned marauding groups that can get quite ferocious in overall strength if they're allowed to ravage the countryside unabated. Your primary enemy is Lord Balkoth, a high level necromancy type guy that flits around the world map on his giant bat, ala Lord of the Rings. Their are 8 basic factions you can choose to play as your race, and you compete for resources on the world map, gaining either more enemies or more trading partners, or even allies. My number one gripe with this game is the horrible stat and magic item system which is really weak, offering no "ooh and ahh" value when you get the really big sword of badassness. In fact, the game is hardly item based at all, and prefers to keep the magic limited to spells, which can become obnoxiously unbalanced. In this era of gaming, playtesting was not widely expected for games of this nature...and it shows. Again, it's really straightforward, there's not much there. The music is pretty cool, reminded me of Diablo I a little bit. Enjoy!

Great Game! I've damaged/lost and re-bought it 3x
It's a great turn based, fantasy world, domination game with politics. Even without codes there are a few cheats/glitches (ei: save practices). The customize option makes it possible to determine your character's/army's strength, but also is a good way to adjust the difficulty. Tons of fun if you're willing to give yourself an honest challenge. It is one of a kind. If someone can point me to another game that is truly similar I would be grateful. Well it was a great game from years gone by and i'm trying to recollect the tings from my past that i have let slip through my fingers. Even though a great number of them feel like they are less then I remember I need to remember that it is the same thing any adult feels when he goes back to a park that he played at as a child. but then again a lot of these games are just clasics :). but i had forgotten that they never finished this game in that the game glitchis in the same place that it did when i was a child booow :( over all I am happy with what i've been buying.Well it was a great game from years gone by and i'm trying to recollect the tings from my past that i have let slip through my fingers.
