The Lonely Doll remains an ageless classic
In 1957 Dare Wright used her skill as a professional photographer to bring her childhood felt doll and two stuffed bears to life, and they live on! Edith, the doll, is lonely. She lives in a nice house and has everything she needs except a family or friends. One day two bears appear. They are everything she hoped for. But one day Edith and Little Bear are very naughty. Mr. Bear is really angry. Will Mr. Bear stay so angry with Edith that he decides to leave? Will Edith be alone once more? I loved these books as a child and recently got some for my 6-year-old. The first time we read the part about Edith being lonely, my daughter teared up. The photo illustrations in these books just make Edith and the bears so real you can't help but identify with her as if the story were about a live ... I have to say as well that I am now an adult and an illustrator. I worked in publishing for several years designing and illustrating and collaborating closely with photographers and there are still pictures in the Lonely Doll that make Edith seem so alive I can't for the life of me tell you how Dare Wright did it! From an illustrator's point of view this book has technical execution that is just visionary. The story is even more touching when you consider Dare Wright's life. She was the child of divorced parents. She lived with her mother and her brother lived with her father. It is interesting that Mr. Bear and Little Bear become father and brother figures for Edith. It seems as thought Wright was able to work through her own loneliness by giving Edith the family Wright herself longed for. The Lonely Doll is my favorite kind of children's book: it is enchanting for the child as well as captivating and thought-provoking for the adult who reads it. Share it with your children or just read it for yourself as soon as you can!

The Lonely Doll is an excellent read!
Beautiful books. Each story has a lesson to learn. I would highly recommend these books to anyone who has little children. Easy read for them to understand and the pictures are beautiful.

Charming well written young childs bedtime book.
My oldest daughter who is now 40 used to have me read her this book almost every night. Wonderful story and well written. She asked if I still had the book ,which unfortunately I didn't, but somone had save a nice copy of it. Which I bought and gave to her.
