About this product

Product Information

Marlon Brando stars as the scientist in the third adaptation of the H.G. Wells classic. The archetypal mad scientist, the good doctor has been conducting a number of experiments in his remote island kingdom, producing a race of genetic mutants both man and beast in his quest to produce a superior creature. The mutants treat Moreau as a virtual god, carrying out his orders with blind obedience. To deal with the few rebels, the scientist has embedded electrodes under their skin through which he can induce a degree of pain sufficient for his purpose. A plane crash-lands on the island, and the only survivor, U.N. negotiator Edward Douglas (David Thewlis), is taken to Moreau's compound by the doctor's demented assistant, Montgomery (Val Kilmer), where he's soon imprisoned. Shocked by Moreau's experiments, Douglas desperately seeks escape but is badly outnumbered by the army of mutants. At length, the creatures discover how to remove the controlling devices from their bodies and attempt a rebellion, but it soon becomes clear that their collective intelligence was not increased by their physical transformation. This film became an instant camp classic, the result of a troubled production on which John Frankenheimer replaced the original director after only a day of shooting. The fine camerawork of veteran William Fraker stands out above all else.

  • The Island of Dr. Moreau (DVD, 1997)

In the year 2010, Dr. Moreau claims to have successfully conquered the impossible: to introduce human DNA into animals, eliminating their baser instincts and thereby creating a supposedly divine human, free from malice and hatred. After many attempts, only one experiment was successful and now the unsuccessful ones are given drugs every day to keep them from regressing into their animal forms. They are also controlled with electrical shock devices to keep them in order. However, one of the creatures tears the shock device from his body and when he informs others of this, the animal hybrids break loose on the island. One of Dr. Moreau's allies is Dr. Montgomery, a physician gone mad with devotion to Moreau and intense drug abuse. United Nations negotiator Edward Douglas, the sole ...

  • HG Wells Novel at it's Worst

Do not confuse this Sci-Fi Flick with the 1977 Island of Doctor Moreau, which has become a cult classic, but unfortunately is now out of print! 1997 arrives with John Frankenhiemer's remake starring Marlon Brando in the famous role of Doctor Moreau. However, Brando is an aging over-weight albino scientist who really appears to be high on drugs or something to the extreme as with the rest of the cast and the Beastmen as well. Val Kilmer plays Brando's assistance, who immediatly in the first 10 minutes of the film breaks the neck of a small helpless rabbit, which in turn really WAS A MAJOR TURN OFF! Why they wasted filming this scene doesn't make sense!! British extrodinare David Thewlis of Dragonheart fame, is rescued by Kilmer after Thewlis' plane crashed and has gone down in the Ocean. On ...

  • The Island Of Dr. Moreau

This movie was a blast from the past and I remembered it had given me chills in my younger years. I wanted to share this with my teen on a rainy Saturday with a bowl of popcorn. Fun, fun.. and considering presently, the advanced special effects this generation is experiencing, Dr. Moreau still held it own in entertainment. Plus having my teen just seeing the movie and reading the book, Street Car Named Desire, in school and being exposed to Val Kilmer in recent films, it was nice to see his reaction to a younger Brando and a younger Kilmer. Also the poor stranded man is now a featured professor in the Harry Potter series, Lupin.

  • Love this movie
