Metro 2033 is an FPS and survival horror game by developer 4A Games and published by THQ for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 4 (PS4) and Windows PCs. With a release date of March 16, 2010, it is the first in the Metro series of games. It has an "M" rating due to the use of realistic violence. 4A Games created Metro 2033 based on the series of novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky. This game for Xbox players is set in the subway system beneath Moscow (known as the "Metro," hence the name) after World War III. With the surface world devastated and too radioactive for humans to occupy, survivors crammed into the series of subway tunnels. They must share and attempt to gather meager supplies, while fighting against mutated monsters, supernatural beings, and warring survivor factions. It follows the story of Artyom, a soldier seeking to join the Polis Rangers and defeat a race of mysterious creatures known as the Dark Ones. Artyom must spend most of the game fighting underground, making his way through various tunnels, service corridors, caves, and hidden structures. At all times outside of individual habitable safe zones, he must wear a gas mask to prevent the inhalation of deadly radioactive fallout, which can kill him very quickly. Likewise, non-mutated enemies must also wear gas masks, and their masks serve as a critical weak point. He must defend himself with a large assortment of improvised weaponry, mostly consisting of assorted home-made or heavily modified guns, knives, and crossbows. Ammo is scarce in this Xbox game and consists primarily of home-made rounds, although military grade ammo is available in rare quantities. This serves as the currency within the game and can be traded for other rare items or expended to deal more damage to enemies. Because ammunition is hard to find and much of the underground map is unlit, the gameplay focuses heavily on stealth and sneaking elements. The player must sneak up on as many enemies as possible, dispatching them with knives, silenced firearms, and bows. Where possible, he must recover thrown or shot projectiles in order to conserve ammunition. Ammunition and weapons, among other items, can also be scavenged from fallen foes. Fortunately, the player character is silent when moving and can be effectively invisible to most enemies by remaining in the shadows. It is also possible to improve the killing power or reduce the noise of some weapons by upgrading them with various accessories to improve performance. These accessories and upgrades require components and military grade ammunition. Weapons are also subject to degradation in this Xbox 360 game and must constantly be maintained to retain effectiveness. Metro 2033 is a great game for the Xbox 360. With a dark atmosphere, mysterious and well-crafted story, this THQ classic is highly regarded for bringing some amazing sneaking and stealth mechanics that were developed for the Xbox 360. One to add to the older game collection.
Fairly straight forward, but with some great twists for survival. The levels are beautifully made. A collector's item in a few years i would guess.

THQ improves
My opinion: I put off buying any game strictly made by THQ for a couple years due to the last THQ game that I couldn’t stand. That does not mean all THQ is bad, I have played games that were THQ joint efforts that were good. I must say this time THQ has come a long way and the game is pretty good but: Most shooters I play at medium to expert. This one I ended up on easy. At least in this level there are plenty of bullets; unfortunately that does not improve game fun. In fact it makes the game less fun but I got tired of doing the same thing over and over. This game has an issue that may confuse you. The main issue I experienced in the first few levels seams to glitch where the gas mask button fails to work as follows. The actual problem is the mask is or has failed due to cracks. So try to have a good gas mask before entering a tough spot. The story it’s self could be great. The presentation and reading of the story to you slowly in a Russian accent over and over becomes very cumbersome. A few levels up and there are more options to skip this dialogue. As for guns, get the AK, it works much better.

Plays a little like Bioshock and Silent Hill.
I see a lot of silent hill as in this could be a survival horror game, but it has a linear gameplay that plays a little like bioshock. It reminds me also a lot of STALKER for the PC and that was the main reason I bought it, because I figured, well I have the xbox why not play more games on it. The price on ebay is FAR below store pricing, at the time of this review used in store is 54.99 ebay was 30.00. The controls are very easy to handle if you have ever played any first person shooter before, sometimes you may have trouble knowing where to go because a few spots in the game lead to dead ends but to my knowledge it is linear based because I have only ever found one way to go. Some of the monsters / creatures are extremely hard to deal with and or kill but why play a game if it is not ... If you are thinking about buying it, get it or wait til the price drops a bit and get it, only because it is still currently single player only and has no online play, to my current knowledge.

Excited to get it, a little let down, but I enjoy it
I really like the story and atmosphere. That alone is worth getting the game, though not for full price. It makes me want to read the book it is based off of so I can experience the storyline from a different angle. Those are really the main PROs for Metro 2033, but there are some CONs that keep it from being a 5 star game; 1) Very linear - Even in Metro Stations where there are people and shops, you are mostly regulated to a small area. Some may argue that this adds to the atmosphere and claustrophobia of the plot, but it doesn't help the gameplay. 2) Guns are weak - I saw this in other reviews and was prepared for it, but still it is true. Alot of the creatures and enemies take a lot of hits to go down, and in a game that uses bullets and ammo as currency it limits the fun of the ... I really like the story and atmosphere. Also, areas are very dark and the guns are very inaccurate at times so I end up wasting a lot of bullets. 3) A couple frustrating parts - So far, the game hasn't been too tough, but there have been parts where checkpoints were far apart and I had to replay the same area a billion times. Turns out, it was because there was a glitch where there was an enemy soldier that couldn't die. I used a couple hundred bullets and multiple grenades at point blank range and he didn't mind it. Eventually I was able to walk passed him and continue. That problem hasn't happened again since. 4) "Chapters" are short - The game is broken up into chapters, which is okay since it's based on a book, however it seems they are very short. As soon as I get into a groove and start having fun with the game, here comes a load screen and more plot. I like the plot, and load screens aren't long, but I was getting into a groove and actually having some fun... Overall, it's a great game to experience, but the concept of bullets for currency and the overall gunplay keeps it from being an amazing experience. Still, I am enjoying it and look forward to reading the book for another take on the story.

Metro 2033 is a game that does so many things right, yet all most see of it are its faults. i liked the atmosphere of the stations, they have a lived in feel to them and the people are well-voiced and the background chatter is great. i also liked the having to recharge your batteries and change your filters, this adds to the tension of trying to sneak past a war zone. the currency is realistic, but it discouraged me from using the ammo because it was also the money. while the story is great, it just doesnt feel explained well enough, and the fact that my character is always following someone and that someone is always better equipped than i am is frustrating. you dont spend enough time in the stations to feel the whole atmosphere of the place, it just seems rushed. the dirty ammo is ...
