In early March 1945, having slugged its way through the Ardennes Forest and the Siegfried Line, Lieutenant-General George S. Patton's Third US Army was fast approaching the Rhine River. On March 7, Lieutenant-General Courtney Hodges' First US Army took the bridge over the river at Remagen, and although Patton heartily congratulated his colleague on this success, he planned to do everything he could to upstage him. Patton was particularly keen to get his Third US Army heavily into the fight so as to forestall any efforts by Eisenhower and Montgomery to siphon off his divisions for the latter's offensive in the Ruhr plain. This superbly illustrated title details the pincer operation executed by the Third and Seventh US armies to clear out the Saar-Palatinate Triangle, and how Patton, who viewed speed and surprise to be more crucial at this point than coordination, then launched a long-planned-for assault crossing of the Rhine at Nierstein and Oppenheim. In Patton's mind, there was no doubt that the Wehrmacht had at last been whipped and the final triumph was at hand - and he was determined to be the one to complete this. Book jacket.
