Modern Times (but not necessarily)...
This album of songs has something for everybody. You can just listen to it, dance to it, use it as great background music, or put it on to clean the house to. I am a HUGE Dylan fan. While to some, Dylan performing his own music is an "acquired taste", I still feel (as someone said in the 1960's) "Nobody does Dylan like Dylan." That said, I really like him doing other writer's songs, also, as he does on some tracks here. I am an even bigger fan of traditional Delta style blues. His take on "Someday Baby", otherwise known as "Worried Life Blues" recorded by many others, is well crafted yet raw enough to tickle the most experienced blues aficionado. The treatment given several of the other tunes is purposefully "Old Timey", which he has always embraced and just adds to his stature as an ... This album of songs has something for everybody. And, of course, never let it be said that the forever young Dylan doesn't enjoy a good oxymoronic title, thus the name of this recording. The Jokerman is still at it. Some of these tunes, such as the waltz time "When the Deal Goes Down", will be just as listenable in 100 years as it could have been 100 years ago. And lyrically, well, what can one say. He set the bar back in 1963 and continues to do so, maybe even more so, than any current songwriter. He's not defined (or constrained) by the expectations of others. Really never has been. So, as always with this man, approach with an open, engaged mind. He takes poetic license with many of the tunes he didn't originally pen (ie. "The Levee's Gonna Break")and, at this stage of his game, I'm all for it. Interpreting what he sings is what he tempts us to do, while rarely hinting at how HE meant them. He wants you to have YOUR take on the songs. And, of course, there's always more going on than meets the ear, so keep listening. Everyone got teased by the TV ads of "Someday Baby", but he doesn't disappoint with this collection. He IS our muse, after all. Is this CD "Blonde on Blonde", or "Blood on the Tracks", no. It doesn't want to be. It's him being him doing songs he, and I'm sure he hopes...you, find enjoyable from many angles. Is this record good for your thirteen year old daughter's party? It depends on how sophisticated she and her friends are but, probably not. But she should hear it sometime just the same. No matter how many have tried, and we're talkin' thousands, he's the only Dylan we've got. And the only one we need. I sincerely recommend this CD (vinyl available, also). Dylan releases 'Modern Times'
I was very excited when I heard of the newest release from Mr. Dylan and moved fast on EBAY to secure a copy almost before it bacame available in local stores. I slid in the cd heading down Highway 27 in Leesburg and was greeted by Thunder on the Mountian-by the time I reached the Lake Square Mall When the Deal goes Down was winding down. I continue to be amazed at the style and lyrical content. A part of me continues to yearn for the young Dylan who brought us 60's standards like Blowin' in the Wind and Just Like a Woman, but in his 60's now, Bob continues to write and perform with energy and a style that remains his own. Also, I really enjoyed the video included with four compositions performed live. Dylan and McGuinn remain the greatest influences on my own writing and it's still ... Modern Times is a great Bob Dylan album. I bought this deluxe edition for the bonus DVD with 4 music videos. If you're a Dylan fan, it's worth getting.

OK but not Dylan
Sucks.... I was hoping that in retrospect, over a lifetime that there would be some more Rain Gonna Fall, St. Augustine, girl from the north country.... etc. Nah, just honkey tonk.... nothing new from a brain that had such promise.... so sad
