About this product

Product Information

In 2358, wildlife artist Wayne Douglas Barlowe joined the first manned flight to Darwin IV, fourth planet in the newly discovered F-Class binary system 6.5 light years from Earth. Now his long-awaited account of that historic journey has been published. More vivid than the holos and more interpretive than the videos, these extraordinary paintings, plus numerous drawings, studies, and sketchbook pages, transport the reader to a wild, beautiful, untouched world-a planet teeming with incredible beasts and exotic vegetation. Expedition is the most important travel book of the 24th century. Selection of the Science Fiction Book Club and the Astronomy Book Club.

  • Seen Avatar? Then you should know who Wayne Barlowe is

When I saw promotional clips for the movie "Avatar", the first thing that came to mind was "Whoa! James Cameron TOTALLY jacked Wayne Barlowe's creature designs!" Well, turns out Barlowe did some work on "Avatar", particularly development of the direhorse creature. Still, I can't help but think that James Cameron was heavily...uh... "influenced" by this beautifully painted, amazingly imagined 20-year-old book, particularly the unique design of the alien creatures and their bioluminescent features. If you like sci-fi, creature design and amazing paintings, then you'd like this book.
