About this product

Product Information

If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, or abandonment. You may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met, when your feelings were dismissed, or when you took on adult levels of responsibility in an effort to compensate for your parent's behavior. These wounds can be healed, and you can move forward in your life. In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay Gibson exposes the destructive nature of parents who are emotionally immature or unavailable. You will see how these parents create a sense of neglect, and discover ways to heal from the pain and confusion caused by your childhood . By freeing yourself from your parents' emotional immaturity, you can recover your true nature, control how you react to them, and avoid disappointment. Finally, you'll learn how to create positive, new relationships so you can build a better life. Discover the four types of difficult parents: The emotional parent instills feelings of instability and anxiety The driven parent stays busy trying to perfect everything and everyone The passive parent avoids dealing with anything upsetting The rejecting parent is withdrawn, dismissive, and derogatory

Gibson, PsyD, gives practical insight into a prevalent problem...The book is impeccably clear...This utter lack of confusion makes the book quite soothing, despite the heavy subject. The soothing effect is amplified by Gibson's caring, knowledgeable voice--it's easy to believe her when she says, 'I wish the very best for you.' This book can be a source of healing for adult children of these kinds of parents--particularly for young adults. But it's also insightful for bosses, therapists, friends, and anyone else who works with, cares for, and supports the people described in this book. Enlightening, pretty much an autobiography about my life growing up with self-centered and emotionally immature parents

Very grateful for this book as it gives me alot of validation that I am not alone with what I have experienced throughout my 34 years of life, growing up with emotionally immature parents and family members. Alot of self-realization and self-actualization that I have been going through these last 10 years during and after college is very parallel with what the author speaks about in her book. Highly recommend for anyone who struggles with self-identity and lack of self-esteem and confidence due to being neglected emotionally by self-centered parents.

  • Must read for anyone w/family issues

3 chapters away from finishing this book and it has been so validating. I’ve highlighted so much of this book as it has described my family and my childhood so well it is as if someone wrote the book specifically for me. To me this means that this is something many people experience and therefore anyone who has any interest in understanding themselves & family should read it. This book is a great gateway into understanding childhood trauma and can lead you into healing and understanding as well as more research into why you are who you are and how to grow from this information.

  • COMPELLING -- AND SO VERY, VERY LIKE THE TRAUMA SO MANY OF US LIVED THROUGH

My freaking childhood -- seriously. Did you, also, have to parent your own parents? Read about internalizers, externalizers, and the roles many of us born to immature adults were forced to play. Compelling. Fascinating. Superb read -- I keep a copy on hand at almost all times. (Seriously.)
