Saxon Math 8/7
I like the Saxon program, especially with the Dive CD to explain all the Lessons and Math Concepts. It seems to take much longer than they estimate to complete the lessons though. It could be just the learning level/ability of the child. I know the paperback style is cheaper than the hardback book, but it seems like it won't hold up for multiple uses but we shall see. I would prefer the hardback book for the textbook. It is a very comprehensive program.I like the Saxon program, especially with the Dive CD to explain all the Lessons and Math Concepts. Saxon Math 8/7 3rd Edition (Hardback v.s. Softback)
I decided to purchase this book because the way the *old* Saxon Math incrementally developed mathematical concepts was excellent. What no one could tell me however, is what the different between this edition of the hardback (HB) and the paperback (PB) Math books are, or if there *is* any difference. So I bought one of each to compare. Saxon 8/7 Third Edition ©2004 hardback (HB) 8/7 is *very slightly* different from the Saxon 8/7 Third Edition ©2004 paperback (PB) 8/7. The HB is geared to Public School students and PB to Home School students. Because of the focus on different types of students, they changed a few words and/or numbers to apply to HS or PS instead of using universal words and/or ideas--which would have been the best of both worlds... The other thing is that this edition of the HB is made with better paper and brighter ink than the PB. The only reason for mentioning this is that it directly influences how easily students who are visual learners learn. Another thing to note is that Saxon 8/7 Third Edition is not completely incrementally developed as it states—(Incrementally developed is supposed to mean that it is developed one concept at a time and then added onto. This edition is only somewhat incrementally developed.) The old 8/7 was much easier to understand and *was* incrementally developed. In other words, the Third Edition of Saxon 8/7 takes some concepts out of thin air in a way that does not make sense. *Every time* we were confused about something in the 3rd Edition book, we went back to the older edition of 8/7 and guess what? The new thrown in concept wasn't in the old book at all--or if it was, it was included much later. (Sweet of them to confuse us like this, huh?) The original Saxon was sold to another publishing company--so the new Saxon--while the solution manuals are somewhat better because they actually work the problem out for you (if you need this) they are also much more confusing in the order the lessons are taught. Funny thing, I think Saxon still has a "help line" where a teacher can call to get help if needed. (The old number was 405-217-1717) So the solution manual isn't as much of a help as a completely understandable text would be... One final thought: IMHO, the only reason a student should go through Saxon 8/7 is if they are in need of a lot of review. Saxon Algebra 1/2 was easily taken into stride by even our 10 year old after going through Saxon 7/6.

Just the right amount of material each day.
This is our first year homeschooling, and Saxon makes it pretty easy to teach. In the lesson book there are sections for a short review, new things, practice, and then the worksheet. At the beginning of each lesson there is a quick synopsis of each lesson to follow. The kit also includes a book that has worksheets for each day that help the student to get warmed up, and also exams that cover every 5 lessons or so. The final book included is the answer key book. I like the way it is set up with the reviews, warm-ups, and it seems like just the right amount of material each day.
