Two years before Michael Moore released his thought provoking study on American violence in BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE, some underground filmmakers decided to deal with the real life high school massacre in their own, bizarre way. This blood splattered spoof attempts to take the devastating nightmare in Littleton, Colorado and diffuse the situation by turning it into a comedy, but some did not find it at all funny. This film about two disgruntled high school students who use handguns to gun down their classmates sparked a controversy that was covered by news sources from all major TV networks. It was also the subject of an investigation by the FBI and even put the filmmakers in jail. This program includes news footage, interviews with filmmakers/actors William Hellfire and Joey Smack (known for producing a string of giddy and outrageous porn films) that sheds light on the vision behind this rather daring project.

Satire Right on the Money - Don't Duck, You'll Miss It
"DUCK!" is definitely a satiric take on many things. It addresses the absurdity of the media, parent's perceptions of their children, the reasons why people are driven to kill, stereotypes, and family. This movie isn't for anyone who is offended by just about everything. The basic plot is that Derwin and Derek are outcasts at Carbine High School. They encounter many abuses by bullies, society, and in some cases by parents. Derwin and Derek decide that they can no longer cope and that if they go anywhere, they'll just find the same thing, so they decide to plan a massacre at their high school. The movie boasts a cast of different stereotypes from the bully jocks, the bible thumper, the granola-girl folk singer, the goth kids, the geeky idiot, and the gearhead to name a few. The ... "DUCK!" is definitely a satiric take on many things. It addresses the absurdity of the media, parent's perceptions of their children, the reasons why people are driven to kill, stereotypes, and family. This movie isn't for anyone who is offended by just about everything. The basic plot is that Derwin and Derek are outcasts at Carbine High School. The situational aspects of the movie make fun of everything from music that drives a dad to hit his wife and run over a kid with a car (i.e. blaming peoples actions on music and media) to the oddity of being able to buy anything over the Internet and the power it holds (Derek and Derwin purchase a nuclear device). The movie bares many striking resemblances to Columbine. There is gore in this movie, but it is really obvious gore with a bunch of obviously fake blood, special FX, and cartoonish fighting noises. This movie does boast a ton of great moments. For instance, when Derwin is beat up by the school bullies, the geek in the wheelchair runs over Derwin's hand proclaiming "I'll get my mom", when Derwin asks him to call 911. Derwin and Derek have an extremely interesting and intense conversation after Derwin is beat up, explaining why they are planning on doing what they have been thinking about. Derwin and Derek purchase a "nuclear missile" off the Internet which looks like one of those oversized rockets you had to build in science class and there is stock footage of a nuclear explosion. There are also many good characters as well. Misty Mundae is incredibly great as "The Bible Girl" who pretty much will stop at no cost to get everyone to go to her youth group meeting. The geeky kid is hilarious and actually reminds me of someone I went to school with. Probably the most disgusting part of the movie for me amidst all the "blood" and "gore" was a scene where Bible Girl goes into this house and they have a death metal band playing and the singer is drooling spit down the microphone (looking alot like Alien) and profusely sweating (yeah, THAT grossed me out). There is some nudity, some references to throwing up, of course the fake blood and stuff I told you about earlier, alot of abusive behavior, depiction of weapons, swearing, and other raunchy stuff. DEFINITELY NOT for anyone under 18. If you buy this movie, please watch the interview with William Hellfire who explains his motive for making the film and explains why there were arrests involved concerning the making of the film. I give this movie an Excellent for uniqueness, bad taste, sense of humor, character depiction, cool yet cheezy FX, open-mindedness, cleverness, entertainment value, schlock, social commentary, strong viewpoint, and Misty Mundae.
