220, 221... Whatever It Takes!
Meet Jack Butler. Car maker. Family man. Loves his wife, digs his kids, enjoys his job. Jack likes to keep thinking positive as he reassures his fellow workers, despite the plant's downsizing, that he's sure they'll keep their jobs. Well, they may keep theirs, but, moments later, Jack (Michael Keaton) enters a meeting only to find that he's LOST his own. Suddenly, the family breadwinner finds himself facing the bread line. Or is he? He arrives at home to the loving, supportive arms of his family ("Does Daddy know we got fired?"). Over the remnants of Colonel Chicken, Jack's in for his second shock of the day. Wife Carolyn (Teri Garr), announces that she's thinking of entering the workplace again, putting her college advertising degrees to good use. To the delight of his sons, Jack bets ... Meet Jack Butler. Car maker. Family man. Loves his wife, digs his kids, enjoys his job. Days later, Carolyn takes the money for lunch on her first day at the Richardson Advertising Agency, while Jack begins HIS first day in the title role of this sweetly funny role reversal romantic comedy. Keaton is endearingly clueless as he stumbles through those "wifely duties" he's always taken for granted. From an intimidating encounter with "Jaws" the vacuum to the chaos he leaves in his wake at the grocery store, Jack begins to realize that the "easy time" his wife has at home every day ain't so easy. Running the errands, doing the laundry, dealing with the repair people and keeping up with the kids nearly does him in. At the end of Day One, he's exhausted, bewildered and shell shocked. Carolyn, meanwhile, has her own problems to deal with as she re-enters the back biting world of advertising. Her lecherous, spoiled boss, Ron Richardson,(Martin Mull), wants more than ad copy. When Carolyn's ideas endear her to Richardson's biggest client, he wants her even more. (Ron: "Dump Jack, marry me. It'll be Richardson & Richardson!" Carolyn: "Are you saying you're in love with me?" Ron: "Oh, hell no, but the client IS...") While Carolyn becomes more self assured as her role in the agency becomes more prominant("It was a little promotion! I forgot to mention it."),Jack begins to feel sorry for himself as he tries to reconcile his new position in their marriage. Addicated to soap operas, he lets the daily chores slide, drinking beer and playing poker for grocery coupons with the other "neighborhood wives", including the very divorced Joan (Ann Gillian). Inevitably, Carolyn must choose between career and family on Halloween, as she flies to California to shoot the big Schooner Tuna commercial. The wives scoop up Jack for a memorable "girl's night out", complete with Chippendale dancers. When Ron answers the phone in Carolyn's hotel room later that night, Joan decides the time has come to make her move. Writer John Hughes cleverly takes us through a situation that was all too common in the 80's while keeping us laughing all the way. Keaton and Garr are at their comedic best. Mull shines as the slimy Richardson.The supporting players are en pointe as well: Christopher Lloyd and Jeffrey Tambour as Jack's co-workers. Jillian as the slinkily stereotypical divorcee, Valerie Bromfield as the TV repairwoman. Of course it all works out in the end, which is why I love this movie. The humour is as clean as the Butler's laundry, but still touching and laugh out loud funny (see Keaton with the chainsaw). Mr. Mom truly earns the title of "Fine Family Fun"! Well worth watching! Buy it!
