    Gods and Generals / Gettysburg

Gods and Generals is the most historically accurate retelling of the events and characters of The War Between The States ever produced, true to history. The research that went into making it accurate is amazing, a lot being actually word for word from history. Not only was the story retold accurately, all the little nuances were correct (down to it being filmed in the correct seasons of the year) and the actor Stephen Lange researched Stonewall Jackson (whom it was largely about) so well before playing the part that it was him in every facet! Hu-rah that this is the truth retold and not what you were taught in school as what was rewritten! If you want real truth, this is it, very dramatically done as it and the persons really were and portrayed as if you were really there. Not a dull ...

  • The God's of Gettysburg

This is an excellent rehashing of the Civil War's most important battle and the men who lead each Army. God's and Generals follows the South's Thomas (Stonewall) Jackson from the pre-war period through his death from friendly fire after Chancellorsville. It is engaging, although a little slow in places. Gettysburg follows the skirmishes leading up the the main battle as well as the interactions of both sides during those three horribly lethal days in July 1863. The highlight of this movie is the Union Army's barely holding onto Little Round Top on the 2nd day due to the gallantry of the Maine regiment and Col. Joshua Chamberlain. Jeff Daniels does a great job of portraying Col Chamberlain, as professor from Bowdoin College who would later become the governor of Maine. A must see for ...

  • Gettysburg a winner,Gods and Generals just OK

Everyone of all ages should see the Gettysburg movie at least once, particularly since our schools do not do the best job with the the importance of the battle and the staggering losses on both sides at Gettysburg. Gettysburg really brings the history to light while being thoroughly engaging and entertaining as a movie. I have used it for a mandatory viewing before taking people to the Gettysburg battlefield or to a Gettysburg reenactment. This was particularly effective when taking my German relatives who knew little of the battle before watching the movie and were visibly moved by their battlefield visit. Gods and Generals is good but it covers too much ground with not enough detail about the period it covers. I did not get this feeling while reading the book. It is a little slow ...

  • Gettysburg yes, Gods and Generals, NO

Gettysburg tries. Don't be fooled. It's based on a book of lies, Killer Angels. According to the lies in this book, a Maine regimental commander persuades bull-headed Maine mutineers to join his regiment the day of the battle. These men help save the day - glory be!!Historically, these Maine deserters from the 2nd Maine actually joined the 20th Maine back in MAY, way before the battle in July. And the commander's orders for a planned bayonet charge is also very suspicious. Such an order was never heard by the other officers who survived this fight. They saw men go downhill to help the wounded; others assumed it was a charge, and charged. Oh, Hollywood. WHOEVER DID THE MAKE-UP SHOULD BE BANNED FROM MOVIES> These beards are about the most FAKE looking things as a Middle ...

  • Well titled.

I like a lot of both DVDS/movies, however .... there is a LOT of non-essential speech-ifying & moralizing in "Gods & Generals". Used to illustrate a point, and to demonstrate the attitude of the times, however it seems vastly overdone and in a couple of situations completely suspect. You can feel the heavy hand of Ted Turner throughout. Gettysburg, made first although 2nd in the trilogy, is a better made movie and tells its story in a clearer way. Sadly, Gen'l Lee is shown as a hard headed leader, unwilling to take advice from Longstreet. While this was indeed the case, the underlying reasons for his insistent action at Gettysburg are not revealed. Fine action scenes in both DVDs, and an educational experience provided you keep in mind that history is always written by the victors. Gods & ...
