All you need and nothing you don't
Great for the price and looks sharp. These are no longer manuafactured so it's challenging to find good models without breaking the bank. These were being made before digital TV was even in the US. What's great about it is it has line inputs without a built-in tuner. Any included tuner today would be useless, need to be worked around, etc. This unit has just what I need and nothing I don't. It does take some time to warm up but again this is expected with slightly older tech. Overall it looks sharp and sounds great. It even has an HDMI output which was new to the market when these were made but is standard now (older DVD recorders have S-video connectors). Great for the price and looks sharp. Well it was not the rdr-gx360 like the add said. I bought the dvd+r dl that it was to use and they did not work. It will not record in 1080p like Tha 360. It was a rdr-gx257. I will not buy from here again. The # should be "0". I did not get what the add said.

Fine but for ONE BIG PROBLEM
I got this unit explicitly to use the set-top-box controller to record multiple timed programs from Verizon FIOS. However, it always sets the box to the LAST channel in the timer list instead of the specified one. I returned it to Sony under warranty, and after 2 round trips, they could either not reproduce or fix the problem so refunded my money. BTW, there is no 'firmware upgrade' possibility. Thinking/hoping this was an offbeat problem with just that unit, I bought another, and it had the same problem; the retailer swapped THAT unit, and #3 does the same thing! I had to give up and get a refund. I seem to be the only person in existence seeing this problem, so one would think *I* am doing something wrong or very unique, but I've tried so many things so many times it seems ... All that being said and exclusive of that problem, the unit(s) recorded fine, and although the quality at the longer recording times wasn't so great, that is to be expected. And for those commenting about HD image quality et al, be aware that DVDs are NOT HD, even if the unit 'upverts' to HD. I used pretty cheap 'Ridata' DVD+RW, they worked fine but some have gone bad after a many reuses. Not sure if that's because they 'wore out' or I got them a little scratched up. I didn't notice any particular noise issues as some reviewers have. So, my overall review is Good to Excellent not considering my timer problem. If that issue is critical to you (as it was me), then be aware that perhaps some units out there won't work for you (thus your personal rating would sink to Poor).

JUST CAN'T BEAT A SONY!!!!!
Great product!!!! Great brand!!!! Great price!!! Can't go wrong with Sony. I was looking to upgrade my old recorder(generic brand)and I knew this would be the perfect component to compliment my A/V system. It's a small but powerful unit and fully loaded with many great features but basically does what it is intended to do..RECORD. And the price was very reasonable compared to the price of my previous recorder. I was a little hesitant to buy "refurbished" but as I said before...it's a Sony so how can you go wrong!!! Love this recorder and would recommend it to anyone looking to replace or make a first time purchase of a dvd recorder.Great product!!!! Great brand!!!! Great price!!! Can't go wrong with Sony. Handy for Archiving the DVR
I purchased this as a refurb on ebay for the sole purpose of being able to archive the cable box's DVR recordings onto DVD's. It hooks up fairly easily and does an easy job of recording. There are several different hook-ups...component, RGB, HDMI, etc. This item was described as a DVD recorder and when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find a VHS player with it...so, really it is a DVD/VHS combo recorder/player. Don't buy this if you expect it to function as a typical video recorder as it does not have its own tuner. Which means you have to keep the cable box on the channel while you record on the DVD.
